Term 2, Week 9

‘THE LEARNING SNAPSHOT’
A NEW WAY OF REPORTING ON YOUR CHILDRENS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND PROGRESS AT KENAKENA SCHOOL

The Ministry of Education has been undertaking a thorough review of the New Zealand Curriculum and, as part of that, has given consideration to the way the learning progress and achievement of students is reported to parents.  One of the significant questions raised was:

How could we shift from reporting to parents and whānau as a twice-yearly ‘compliance’ activity to ongoing information sharing with students, parents, and whānau, recognising that this is a critical component of educationally powerful partnerships for learning? (Curriculum, Progress and Achievement – Emerging Findings 2018).

Like many schools, Kenakena has been considering how we can make good use of technology to report more effectively and in a more timely manner.  One of the technology tools we have been using is the Seesaw App, which began as a trial.  Seesaw will soon be used school-wide to provide you with regular examples of the work your children are producing.  Children often post their own work, which can include comments from them and from their teachers.  This allows regular opportunities for you to engage with your children by discussing their work with them and writing your own feedback.

Our next step is to build more structure around the use of Seesaw as a means of reporting achievement and progress that will take the place of the traditional twice-per-year written report.  We will still need to show you where your child sits in relation to their age and stage of education.  What we want to achieve is to give you regular Learning Snapshots of your child’s learning and achievement that are accurate and up-to-date rather than you having to wait six months to hear about it.

We will still have Parent-Teacher Conferences in Terms 1 and 4.

The transition to Learning Snapshot reporting will begin this year for students from Years 5 – 8, with a transition to the whole school in 2020.

In the lead up to the Term 4 Parent Teacher Conferences, we will be giving you information on how The Learning Snapshot works.  This will kick off with a parent information evening for the parents of children in Years 5-8.

The Learning Snapshot Reporting Information Evening
Thursday, July 25th at 7pm in the School Hall for Parents of Children in Years 5-8.

MATARIKI HANGI

A Matariki Hangi is being prepared to feed all the school’s children.

The celebration of Matariki, which many Maori regard as ‘New Year’, has been rejuvenated in Aotearoa/New Zealand.  Kenakena School has celebrated Matariki in recent years through a school-wide feast from a hangi, where food is cooked over hot stones and irons in the ground.  For those of you new to New Zealand, here is a link you can view to see what a hangi is all about:

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HOST INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS OR HAVE A HOUSE TO RENT OUT ?

We would love to hear from you urgently.

We have had some inquiries from several families from China wanting to come in Term 3. They are one parent and 2 Children coming for between 1 & 3 weeks. If you have room to host them, or you have a house to rent out, please get in touch.

Hosting an International Student can be an enriching experience for all involved.  Your family will be able to ‘show off’ some of our beautiful country and at the same time learn about a different culture from the comfort of your own home.   In turn, we hope the students will leave with many happy memories of staying with a Kapiti Coast family and studying at Kenakena School.

Host families are supported by the school’s pastoral care programme and a homestay payment of $300 per person / per week.

If you are interested to find out more or to sign up as a host family, please contact Renee Pellikaan, Homestay Co-ordinator, Phone work 2984011 or email principalsPA@kenakena.school.nz
