Term 3, Week 5

This year we have engaged Nest Consulting to deliver their fun, positive, engaging, interactive and informative puberty education, life skills & empowerment programme to our Year 5-8 students.

The programme includes health and wellbeing puberty education alongside parts of our ”Body Talk©’ Programme looking at self esteem, body image, media awareness, critical thinking skills and more.
Delivered through the lens of the World Health Organisation recognised Hauora approach – a unique kiwi tool focusing on achieving wellness through the balance of all our parts – our body, our mind, our spirituality, our social and physical environment.

For Year 7/8 additional components of cyber safety, ok/not ok – looking after self and media manners / anti-bullying are included.

Nest Educators also promote that health and wellness of self is inextricably linked to the health and wellness of the planet and include elements of ‘waste free’ living in all our work.

The programme is delivered over a full school day and designed at two levels for Year 5/6 & Year 7/8.

The educators will meet with parents/whanau of Year 5-8 for 75 minutes on Monday August 26 at 6:00pm in the Hall to discuss with you the course outline and answer any questions.
Please email to book your spot at this meeting.

Future Choices is an exciting and inspiring programme for Year 8 girls, designed to build self-esteem, confidence and self-belief so that they can make safe and healthy decisions as they grow into young women.

Marie Mead and Sue Gray have designed the programme and planned the activities to suit the students and the challenges the girls are currently facing.
There is a strong emphasis on social skills (including communication, helping others and being part of a team) and our girls are also encouraged in their leadership development.

Each learning session has a different focus and there is always a strong element of practical activity, fun, sharing and student voice.
Guest speakers and instructors are utilised in the programme, which covers supporting each other, dealing with stress and changes, social media and taking care of their bodies and mind.

Other activities include biking, yoga, City Fitness gym visit and the Paekakariki Escarpment Walk.

‘Through learning and by accepting challenges in health-related and movement contexts, students reflect on the nature of well-being and how to promote it. As they develop resilience and a sense of personal and social responsibility, they are increasingly able to take responsibility for themselves and contribute to the well-being of those around them, of their communities, of their environments (including natural environments), and of the wider society.’ The NZ Curriculum

2019 New Zealand Children’s Book Awards Mastermind Quiz

Today two teams of 5 Kenakena students competed against other local schools in a Book Quiz run by the Kapiti Coast District Library.
Both teams had to read 15 New Zealand books (5 non-fiction, 5 fiction and 5 picture books) and answer questions on each one.
I am so proud of both our teams. They worked so hard to read their books over the last few weeks, mostly in their own time.
Working with the students was a highlight for me and the students commitment was excellent.

The Year 5/6 team were Sophie Walshaw, Samantha Muirhead, Paige Taylor, Lucy Paisley and Alyssa Bryant. They worked so well as a team and finished 4th out of 8 teams.

The Year 7/8 students were Grace McKenzie, Brie Kirby, Zoe Boyd, Lisa Digovich and Emma Howes. They did exceptionally well and finished 2nd.

Working with the students was a wonderful experience for me, as their enthusiasm for reading, discussing the books and remembering the details was fantastic.

Thank you to the parents who helped with transport .

ROAD SAFETY - Please help keep our children safe!

A reminder to all parents please - LOOK ONCE , LOOK TWICE, THINK BIKE !

We have had a few incidents recently in the streets around our school, where kids have actually been knocked off their bikes !!  Thankfully other than bruises, bleeding knees and elbows there have not been any more serious injuries.

Also teachers supervising Road Patrol are regularly witnessing parents taking their children across the road only metres away from the school pedestrian crossing. These parents are setting a disappointing example for their children.

We have a wonderful, dedicated group of students who work hard to ensure they are on road patrol duty before and after school to help your child cross the road safely.

Teachers spend a lot of time at school instilling safe practices and routines in many areas of your child's daily life.
Please support us in the daily routine of getting all our children to and from school safely each day.

The Parenting Place
You've got this — I believe in you!

A day in the life of a child is a roller coaster of emotions. The highs and lows of survival can have them utterly overwhelmed a lot of the time. It’s true that kids don’t have the stress or the pressure of holding down a job and a household. But they do have the unrelenting pressure of keeping up with the big kids, finding someone to play with, sharing their stuff, and keeping up with their schoolwork.

Maybe you’ve got a child who outwardly stresses about things and bleats about every little thing that is bothering them. Maybe you’ve got a child who likes to give you the impression that they can manage every little thing thing all by themselves. Regardless of their temperament, all kids need to know that their parents have their back and wholeheartedly believe in them.

For lots of great parenting resources or to find a workshop or event in your community, head to

Teaching the Trinity College syllabus to encourage students to develop and improve communication skills. Lessons are designed to promote confidence in speaking and or performance and general speech quality.

Interested in Chess? Every Tuesday at 7 pm, the Kapiti Chess Club runs a coaching session for kids. Open to everyone, regardless of level, this is a great way to learn and improve chess from an expert coach, and have some fun playing with others. We meet at the Salvation Army rear hall at 41 Bluegum Road, Paraparaumu.
