Term 3, Week 7

We are all very proud of the four Kenakena Tournament of Minds teams that competed at the Regional Tournament held at Victoria University Wellington last Saturday.
One Year 7 &8 team came first in Language Literature Section and the other Year 7/8 team came first in The Arts.

Our Year 5 & 6 team came first in The Arts and the other Year 5/6 team came first in Social Sciences.

All four teams will now go on to compete in the National Tournament in Wellington on September 21st.

I was very impressed by the enthusiasm, energy and creativity with which our groups performed in practices leading up to the event.

They had prepared well under the guidance of Janine McDonald and Tatia Downer.  Thanks to both of you for your ongoing (and successful) commitment to our Tournament of Minds Programme.

Thank you, to the parents and families who supported the teams in Wellington, and to the children of all four teams who supported each on Saturday.

Good luck for the Nationals!

It is so important for the school to have accurate contact details of parents/caregivers in case of illness or an emergency.
PLEASE email to add contacts and/or alter the details we may have. Having four people (some local) to contact makes it easier for the school and lessons anxiety for your child, especially if there is an emergency that keeps you out of the area.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week Kowhai Team visited the Bugs: Our Backyard Hero exhibition at the Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt.

This wonderful trip was very informative, engaging and supports the learning the students have been doing in their Mini Beasts topic his term.
Please see below some of the photos Mrs Norris took of Room 17 exciting activities at the exhibition.
They learnt how to classify mini beasts, had opportunities to look up close at live and preserved mini beasts and to dress up as well!
Thanks to the Gallery who provided a great learning experience for Kowhai students and who donated a bug picture book to each class that visited.

Each class also made bee-friendly seed bombs and created individual and collaborative artworks as part of their education programme. Here’s Room 6 displaying their collaborative artwork.

The Great Whānau Race - Primary School Level Event!

Paraparaumu College  are hosting The Great Whānau Race on Tuesday September 10th from 5.30pm-7pm at the Paraparaumu College Auditorium. This event is a fundraiser for Pillars, an organisation which helps develop programmes for children who have parents in detention facilities. Entry to the event is free, where donations to Pillars are optional. The event has a free BBQ, optional zumba, 3 legged races, sack races, charades and more! We are promoting people attend in small teams (either with their families or in a small group of friends) to help build community spirit.
We were thinking that perhaps primary school students and their families would be interested in attending this event, and was wondering if it was possible that if you primary school did end of week newsletters, it could be advertised through there? It will be a lot of fun!
