The Wines from Alsace

In October 2022, I had the pleasant opportunity of visiting Alsace. Throughout history, the Alsace region has changed hands between France and Germany.

The people have both French and German surnames. The restaurants serve French and German cuisines. So much of the history is intertwined, one morning in Strasbourg city center, I stood in front of a statue of a mother mourning the death of her two sons in the Franco-German war. One son was French, the second was German. This says it all!

Alsace wines such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Sylvaner are German varietals as well. But the similarity ends there. Alsace wines are delightful, elegant, and French made! Riesling is dry, balanced, with good minerality and fruit. Gewürztraminer has a beautiful perfume and good acidity. Muscat was a very pleasant surprise with a sensual bouquet bursting with fruit.

Our partners Robert and Guillaume Klingenfus hosted me in Molshiem where we had a tour of their Grand Cru vineyard. They even let me participate in the late harvest (vendage tardive). We enjoyed a beautiful lunch (German style) and a tour of the village center where the fastest car in the world Bugatti is made!!

I wish Robert a quick and complete recovery of his health.

Oktoberfest starts in September!!! Oktoberfest is an annual German celebration. This year it starts on September 17th to October 3rd. Of course beer and wine play a major role in these festivities. For wine selections, I recommend Alsatian, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer from All Star Wines. For the meal, my choice would be Choucroute which is made with ham, three types of sausages, over a bed of sauerkraut.

God Bless America!
