ODISSEI Conference Call for Papers: final week

The Call for Papers for the ODISSEI Conference will close next week. The conference seeks to bring together a community of scholars to discuss data, methods, infrastructure, ethics and theoretical work related to digital and computational approaches in social science research. Submissions are open to researchers from all career stages, including PhD candidates and Master students. Abstracts of up to 300 words should be submitted no later than Thursday 30 June 2022. The conference will feature confirmed keynote speakers Professor Frauke Kreuter and Professor Matthew Salganik. The conference will take place on 3 November in Utrecht: please save the date.

ODISSEI Community on Zenodo launched

The ODISSEI Community on Zenodo is now live! Zenodo is an open repository for digital objects. Upon upload on Zenodo, records are assigned a persistent identifier (a doi), which makes outputs more easily findable and citable. Zenodo is flexible as it allows the upload of various types of outputs, including text documents, scripts and presentations. In addition, the Zenodo ODISSEI Community allows to collect outputs from collaborations within the ODISSEI consortium. We encourage you to add your ODISSEI-related outputs to the collection.

Data support needs in the ODISSEI Community

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

The number of data support staff members in Dutch academic institutions is growing. The importance of supporting good data stewardship prompted the ODISSEI Data Manager and two representatives from DANS to field a small survey. The survey gauges the needs of data stewards supporting researchers working with (quantitative) social sciences at the various ODISSEI member organisations. Based on the responses to this survey, in May 2022 the ODISSEI FAIR Data team published the report “Assessing FAIR Data Support Needs Amongst Data Supporters in the ODISSEI Community”. The report is now openly accessible on the Zenodo Community.

ASReview is out

ASReview, a tool that is developed in collaboration with ODISSEI, offers a user-friendly, open-source interface which can be used to screen large amounts of textual data, like in the case of systematic reviewing or performing the meta-data analysis. ASReview has been recently launched and it features a simulation mode, so anyone can test the performance of different machine learning models (including your own models) and their effectiveness. Join the ASReview User Meeting on 1 July to learn more about the tool and its potential.

Reminder: eScience Call and LISS panel Call open

The eScience Call and the LISS panel Call are currently open for submissions. Researchers working at one of the ODISSEI member organisations can apply for:

In-kind investment consisting of hours worked by Research Software Engineers (RSEs) from the Netherlands eScience Center. This call closes on 6 September, 14 hrs (CEST).

Researchers can moreover apply for free data collection through the LISS panel and for funding for a project that expands the LISS panel data with CBS microdata. This call closes on 23 September, 15 hrs (CEST).

SANE presented at SURF Cloud event

Privacy, copyright, and competition barriers limit the sharing of sensitive data for scientific purposes. At the SURF Cloud event on 23 June, ODISSEI Chief Technology Officer Lucas van der Meer and Steven Claeyssens of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) will present on the Secure ANalysis Environment (SANE): a virtual container in which the researcher can analyse sensitive data, and yet leaves the data provider in complete control. By following the Five Safes principles, SANE will enable researchers to conduct research on data that up until now are hardly available to them.

ODISSEI at the National Open Science Festival

The programme for the Dutch National Open Science Festival is now available online. ODISSEI will be present throughout the day. In the morning, ODISSEI SoDa team leader Erik-Jan van Kesteren will lead a workshop on synthetic data. The ODISSEI Coordination Team will welcome you to an ODISSEI booth during the marketplace. In the afternoon sessions, first our data manager Angelica Maineri co-organizes a session on FAIR discussions, and then the ODISSEI Portal will be presented. The Netherlands National Open Science Festival will take place at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam on 1 September 2022. We look forward to seeing you there!

ODISSEI Coordination Team updates

The ODISSEI Coordination Team welcomes a new team member and says goodbye to a team member:

Sofia den Haan started in May 2022 as ODISSEI’s Project Management Officer. In her role Sofia will provide support to the existing Coordination Team in the areas of finance, administration and community management. After obtaining her master’s at the Rotterdam School of Management, Sofia worked in project support in the shipyard industry. In the upcoming time she will focus on various activities, such as work on documents/reports, support of meetings, collaborations, and events.

Godelieve de Wijer, who was one of ODISSEI’s Community Managers from September 2022 onwards, has left the Coordination Team to become a Community Mobilizer at the peace organisation Pax for peace. As ODISSEI Community Manager in the past year, Godelieve was a fantastic and enthusiastic colleague, who was one of the driving forces behind the organisation of the first SICSS-ODISSEI summer school. The ODISSEI team thanks her for all that she has done to grow the ODISSEI community and wishes her all the best in her new role at Pax.
