Letter from the Editor

  Dear friends,
April showers bring May flowers. Well, we hope only a little rain and overnight only, mud season is always interesting. With spring here it means it is time for Quinte Canine's annual Spring Scent Detection Trial. So this means we need everyone to wish for no rain for us April 27th and 28th. Our amazing judges from British Columbia get enough rain of their own out there and we would love to show off the beautiful Ontario sunshine to them! Aside from longer days and more sunshine it means we are getting very busy with private appointment and group classes. With that said this time of year it may take us a day longer then normal to respond to emails, class requests, etc. So please bare with me as I try my best.

Your friend,
Yvonne Ferguson,

Finding a Rescue - Part 1
Reputation and Status

by Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI

After a set of articles to help you select a breeder, we feel it is helpful to also assist those who want to find the right rescue dog. Many people choose to adopt a dog (or puppy) from a rescue due to large number of dogs in need of a home. We fully support a persons right to choose a rescue dog but want to ensure the adopter is well educated before making such a big commitment.  Whether purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder or adopting from a reputable rescue, it is a big commitment and being educated about the implications of this is very important.

One of the first things a potential adopter should review is the status of a rescue organization. Although some rescues are also registered charities, this process can take many years to achieve and does limit the organization in many ways. When looking at a rescue organization you should ensure that they have at least not-for-profit status.  This gives a quick first look at the rescue and shows they are less likely to be a 'pop up' or short term organization (although this is no guarantee of it).

An adopter can also contact local (local to the area the rescue is located) shelters or humane societies to see if they have ever heard of the organization. Unfortunately, scams and puppy mill farmers have masqueraded as rescues in the past. Is the rescue asking for a deposit from you without providing any information? This may be a sign of something more sinister going on. Please be very careful when money starts to become involved.

Knowing if the rescue wants the right home for the right dogs is very important. If a rescue cares about the dogs it is sending into homes they will ask you a very large amount of information. Just like a reputable breeder, this may come in the form of a lengthy questionnaire or interview.
Asking you for references such as your veterinarian may come up as well. Take this all as a good sign that they want to make both you and the dog successful in spending a lifetime together.  A rescue should be able to provide you with information on other reputable rescues if they do not have the right dog to fit your life. Asking around and speaking to different rescues will allow you to hear about some other good options.

Stay tuned for more information our issue next month, Finding a Rescue - Part 2 - Supporting the Adopter!

SEEKING: New detection practice locations!

Quinte Canine Scent Detection Students (aka the Super Sniffers) are looking for new and different locations to practice the amazing sport of scent detection! Once students complete classes they are able to join the Super Sniffers (which is a practicing club) and we schedule 3-4 practices per month.

If you have a location (this could be a business, building, home, cottage, etc.) that you would allow our amazing dogs to practice in please let us know by email quintecanine@hotmail.com. It is important for the dogs to get into new locations as often as possible to keep their skills sharp, learn new skills and build confidence.

Practices are normally held on Wednesday (daytime) and Sunday (daytime) but other days can be worked out.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and get a firsthand look at how it all works!

Why doesn't anyone want to work for dogs?

Because they hound their employees!
