August Newsletter!

This summer is really starting to heat up. Temperature wise and trial wise. We are preparing for our upcoming scent detection trials. Our 'mini trial' is being held on August 7th and we hope to soon share a lot of fun news!  We are also heating up to our large annual trial which will be held in Corbyville Saturday September 3rd through Monday September 5th. With so many awesome dogs running throughout the weekend from all over the province, we hope to make it a fun event! But there is no way we could hold these types of events without the amazing help of volunteers throughout the weekend. If you are interested in helping volunteer, learning more about the amazing sport of scent detection and getting to see some great teams please reach out to us at quintecanine@hotmail.com to volunteer. We will also be hosting our usual raffle draws in support of the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward.

With the hot weather, our dogs are also needing a little extra attention. It is important to understand that even though we might enjoy a day in the high 20s with a great breeze, we are only enjoying it due to the great cooling system that evolution has provided us - sweat glands. Remember that our dogs dont cool themselves in the same way so watching for heat signals is critical. It is a great time of year to have nice walks in the early morning or late evening.  And when heat waves hit and it is just too hot to be walking or exercising outside, have some fun indoors and work more on exercising the brain instead of the body through feeding enrichment, training and fun mental tasks! Say cool but also stay safe!

Registration
To register for any of the above classes visit: https://www.quintecanine.com/registration
Once payment is made and the registration form has been received, we will process your class enrolment and send you an email with all of the details and class handouts.  Please note that those who submit both payment and form (payment only needed for existing students) will receive first opportunity to register.

New - Although the registration process above is always to fastest to secure a space in class, walk-in enrollments are accepted Mondays from 4-5, Wednesdays 4-5. Please remember to bring your dogs vaccinations.

Classes are limited in size to provide dogs and handlers with maximum learning opportunities.  Because they are limited they often fill quickly.  In the very rare case a class does not fill with the minimum number of participants (50%) we may choose to postpone, reschedule or cancel classes.  Should this occur, we will provide the option to participants to apply their class registration fee toward the postponed or rescheduled class, an alternative class or provide a full refund.
Play Dates!

We have play dates available for puppies and young dogs who are very well socialized and enjoy the company and play of others. Play mates are matched up based on a number of factors to help build your dog/puppies confidence and skills. Play dates are 30 minutes each and are just $15 taxes included, due at the play date. All dogs and puppies joining must be up to date on vaccinations in order to join the fun. If you are new to play dates (have not yet attended one) and would like to join, please email us at quintecanine@hotmail.com, so we can match your dog accordingly.

Please note that if you sign up for a play date and are not able to attend you must provide at least 48 hours notice so we can fill your space, otherwise our standard play date fee still applies. Please be sure to mark your calendar as no reminder emails are sent. Handlers remain with their dog/puppy throughout the play session to learn more about dog communication. Please email us all of the dates/times that you are interested in and available for and we will be sure to match you up as best possible with other dogs/puppies that suit your dogs temperament. In some cases, larger dogs may join small groups and adult dogs may join puppy/small groups - this is based on the temperament of the dog(s).

Charger Update!

We continue to receive wonderful and very welcome updates from our best buddy Charger. His new home is such a perfect fit for him and we could not be happier. Although we miss him dearly we know he is absolutely loving life with Alan and Jocelyn and have many adventures including daily hikes, romps around the yard, playing with his favorite soccer ball and relaxing at the cottage.

But the months cannot go by fast enough as Charger will be coming home on October 15th to join us again this year at the Wiggle Waggle Walkathon in support of the Human Society Hastings Prince Edward! We are counting down the many days until then when we can snuggle up to this big goofy boy and hope you will come out and join us!
Introducing our newest Quinte Canine’s Canine: Raya
Official name: Quinte Canine’s Ray A Sunshine - Call name: Raya

Raya is a 4 1/2-year-old Sable Working Line German Shepherd and Yvonne’s newest ‘partner in crime’. Raya is a rather 'green dog', knowing just a few cues like sit, down, paw, wait and come. But as we all know, age is no matter and Raya is already learning many new cues, tricks, dock diving, disc, and has even begun her training in scent detection.

She is extremely affectionate, enjoys people and has already begun to bond very well with Yvonne. Raya is an extremely high drive girl with toy drives beyond our wildest imagination. But with this drive also comes a mental block in some ways. Her drive for a toy is so high that her ability to learn and think is blocked by the simple thought of a toy. We will be using food rewards for learning phases of her training and hope to transition her to toy rewards in maintenance phases.

We are very excited to continue working with Raya and look forward to what the future holds for her.
The Quinte Canine Super Sniffer need your help!

We are starting to safely plan for our detection dogs to begin their practices again and we are in need of new and unique locations for the dogs to work!

This could be an old unused building, business or cottage!
Places we have practices before: pet stores, vet offices, industrial buildings, outbuildings, homes, mechanical shops, and so much more!

If you could provide some of our amazing super sniffers a location to practice for a day you would get a front row seat to the coolest dog sport around!  Please reach out at quintecanine@hotmail.com so we can chat.

(Social distancing, masks and other COVID protocols are followed).
