Letter from the Editor
Dear friends,
It looks like the actual summer has finally decided to arrive. With that said we hope you, like us, have adjusted your schedules and habits to accommodate your dogs during the hot weather. Walking in the early morning and/or evening, minimizing sun exposure and watching for signs of heat stress are just a few things we always recommend during the hottest parts of the year. Remember that the only good hot dog is one between some buns with ketchup!
Your friend,
Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI

SEEKING: New detection practice locations!
Quinte Canine Scent Detection Students (aka the Super Sniffers) are looking for new and different locations to practice the amazing sport of scent detection! Once students complete classes they are able to join the Super Sniffers (which is a practicing club) and we schedule 3-4 practices per month.
If you have a location (this could be a business, building, home, cottage, etc.) that you would allow our amazing dogs to practice in please let us know by email quintecanine@hotmail.com. It is important for the dogs to get into new locations as often as possible to keep their skills sharp, learn new skills and build confidence.
Practices are normally held on Wednesday (daytime) and Sunday (daytime) but other days can be worked out. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and get a firsthand look at how it all works!

Finding a Rescue - Part 3
Does it Come with Fries?
by Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI
With the last 2 parts to this series we have talked about finding a reputable and respectable rescue along with the support and assessment processes they may go through to help you with your new dog. Another part to consider now is what the dog you are adopting comes with. Unlike ordering from your favorite fast food restaurant, adopting a dog should come with some critical things that cannot be mixed and matched.
Being up to date on core vaccinations makes logical sense for any pet but many rescues do not vaccinate or check vaccination status of the dogs they intake. If a rescue is lucky, they may receive a dog with full paperwork and can know the vaccination status of the dog they are re-homing, but this is often not the case. Vaccinating a dog against Rabies and DHP is important in keeping everyone's pets healthy long term. Many may be fearful of vaccinating a dog who may have just recently been vaccinated which can lead to adverse side effects but thankfully titre testing technology is quickly growing and can even be done by some veterinarians in house, reducing costs dramatically (titre testing is a blood test to check to see if a dog has enough antibodies to defend against viruses that they have already received vaccinations for in the past).
Most rescues mandate is to help homeless pets find new homes and live long and happy lives. But the long list of dogs needing adopting is in part due to irresponsible breeding and accidents by pets that are not neutered. A rescue should ensure that all dogs they are re-homing are spay/neutered to prevent even more homeless pets in the future. Some may say that this is now the responsibility of the new home but by passing this responsibility to the new homes the rescue is really not doing everything they can to reduce unwanted pets, which should be a part of their mission. Sending intact animals back into the population can enable back yard breeders, puppy mills and general 'accidents'.
Although many rescues provide spay/neuter and vaccination records with every dog there are the rare few that do not and it is important that the potential adopter ask the rescue is they provide spay/neuter and vaccinations, and if not, be prepared for those expenses. Along with a check up at your own veterinarian after adoption the cost of spay/neuter and vaccinations may be more then thought after adoption fees are paid.
Now this all sounds rather expensive and I can certainly appreciate that rescues work very hard for every dollar they have donated. But passing the responsibility off to the potential adopter is no way to help the population long term. Spay/neuter clinics, fee increases, rescue discounts at veterinarians and special fundraisers are all a part of rescue and ensuring that the dogs they are adopting into the world are given the best possible chance at a happy life long term should be the goal. Where there is a will there is a way.
