Letter from the Editor
Dear friends,
With October being such a busy month here at Quinte Canine, all of our remaining classes for 2019 have filled. Although I said I would not add additional classes, in order to provide myself a small respite, I have bowed to social pressure and added just a few starting mid-December. With the classes starting on Monday nights, it does not interfere with any specific holidays so we hope you can join us.
Although with many classes, private sessions and planning for our upcoming Holiday Party (please see invitation below with RSVP information), I and a strong handful of Super Sniffers (Quinte Canine Advanced Scent Detection Students) ventured off to Campbellville Ontario for the first ever SDDA Scent Detection National Cup Challenge. Along with all the fun and a few surprises we became stronger teams and had a blast with our dogs. You can read more about the fun in this newsletter.
I would also just like to send a special thanks to Tina Sawicki, picture lady extraordinaire who takes many of our amazing photos!
Your friend,
Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI

October Super Sniffer Success!
The end of October saw the first ever Sporting Detection Dogs Association (SDDA) National Challenge Cup held in Campbellville Ontario! This fun filled 3 days was a great chance for teams of detection dogs and handlers form across Canada to come together and have a great time with their dogs. The Friday was a Games day with new titles, fun hides and even a wedding! Yes, you read that right, a wedding. SDDA Judge Doug Teeft from Nova Scotia was one of the many amazing judges on hand over the weekend to help us challenge our dogs. Doug and his new wife Cathy decided to share a very special moment with their 'scenting family' by holding their wedding at the event! Congratulations to Doug and Cathy and thank you so much for sharing your day with us! All day Saturday and the Sunday morning were qualifying searches for dog and handler teams. Quinte Canine Super Sniffers had a very large contingent present with Rhody & Colleen, Kaylee & Tina, Thunder & Yvonne, Jessie & Marylyn, Matilda & Rose, Shug & Janet, Ben/Chaz & Laurie and Michka & Mary!
All the teams worked very hard and had a lot of fun with their dogs all weekend long and we are very proud of them! At lunch of Sunday, the top 12 teams from the qualifying rounds were announced and moved forward to the finals, held Sunday afternoon. Over 80 dog and handler teams entered the SDDA National Challenge Cup and THREE Super Sniffer teams made the finals this year, Matilda & Rose, Ben & Laurie and Thunder & Yvonne.
With a few jitters out of the way and some fun searches the results turned out incredible!
Ben & Laurie placed 11th overall
Matilda & Rose placed 9th overall
Thunder & Yvonne placed 6th overall
(Yvonne tied in points for 5th place but was placed in 6th with qualifying points being the tie breaker)
All of the Super Sniffer teams have made us very proud and it warms our heart to know you love watching your dogs have fun!
Many have asked why Yvonne did not run her own German Shepherd Dog, Wrangler at the National Cup. Wrangler was entered into the event when registrations opened in the spring but he has since sustained an injury which has him on 6 or more weeks of cage rest. Since Wrangler needed to stay home during the event (although I know he would have loved it and made us very proud), Yvonne was lucky enough to borrow a dog for the event. Our friend Tina (who runs Thunder and Kaylee) was gracious enough to allow Yvonne to pilot Thunder over the weekend. (Context: Thunder spends a good amount of time at Yvonne's home and is referred to as 'Yvonne's part-time dog' and Thunder refers to Yvonne as his 'other mother', Thunder is also one of Wranglers best friends.) With Yvonne and Thunder's bond a strong one, Tina's hard work training with him, and some great team work and skills they still managed to place 6th. It really does take a village.
We had a lot of fun and really want to thank the SDDA, volunteers, judges and all of the helping hands for so much hard work and dedication. It takes an army to pull off and event of this size and all of their hard work was showing all weekend long! We would also like to congratulate our friend Val Archibald and her dog Quick (Belgian Malinois) for being the 1st place team overall, getting to raise the cup!

Thank you so much to the Quinte Canine Super Sniffers for such an amazing surprise! The group had a special ribbon and sash made up to recognize Wrangler after his retirement from detection due to his current health issues. They have dubbed him the "Royal Grand Master Champion.
With a little help from a friend at the SDDA they had them made up and even Super Sniffers logo added as the center pin. They presented the ribbons to me at the Nationals this past month. Even though Wrangler could not join us, he was certainly there in spirit!
|
|
And yes, there was some very emotional ugly crying from me because if it where not for Wrangler, my interest in scent detection may not have been sparked. Wrangler was the inspiration for the Super Sniffers and is always a champion in my heart.
Thank you again Super Sniffers. You are really a second family to us!
~Yvonne & Wrangler (aka Wankerpants)

SEEKING: New detection practice locations!
Quinte Canine Scent Detection Students (aka the Super Sniffers) are looking for new and different locations to practice the amazing sport of scent detection! Once students complete classes they are able to join the Super Sniffers (which is a practicing club) and we schedule 3-4 practices per month.
If you have a location (this could be a business, building, home, cottage, etc.) that you would allow our amazing dogs to practice in please let us know by email quintecanine@hotmail.com. It is important for the dogs to get into new locations as often as possible to keep their skills sharp, learn new skills and build confidence. We try to only reuse the same location once every 6 months.
Practices are normally held on Wednesday (daytime) and Sunday (daytime) but other days can be worked out. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and get a firsthand look at how it all works!
