Letter from the Editor

  Dear friends,
February, the month of love! Along with all the extra special love you are giving and receiving this month, we hope you can spare some loving for the Quinte Humane Society. With National Cupcake Day and the Trivia & Treats coming up, what better way to feel love deep down inside than supporting the thousands of animals they assist each year.  Check out our upcoming Community Events listed at the end of the newsletter for more information.
Along with it being the month of love, it is also that time of year when we all bury ourselves under blankets with our dogs in hopes that spring will find us soon. Many of us just about ready for it all to be over, your dog doesn't care how grey and gloomy it is outside, as long as he is with you having fun.  So pull out the winter jackets and boots and go for an adventure somewhere new with your dog! Share your adventure and a picture with us on the Quinte Canine Facebook page and we will brag about how much fun you are having to inspire others! Not up for getting out of the house? You can still do so many fun things inside with your dog to help stimulate his brain and keep you both on your toes! Why not grab a box form the recycling and see how many fun new things you can train with that one simple box. You might be surprised at how much you come up with or how many laughs you can share with your dog. What better way to show your dog how much you love him or her by enriching your dogs brain! You might be surprised at how many extra special love kisses you get in return!

Your friend,

Registration
To register for any of the above classes visit: https://www.quintecanine.com/registration
Once payment is made and the registration form has been received, we will process your class enrollment and send you an email with all of the details and class handouts.

Previous students: if you have completed a registration form in the past you do not need to complete one again unless your information has changed or this is a new dog. Please just email us to register.

Classes are limited in size to provide dogs and handlers with maximum learning opportunities.  Because they are limited they often fill quickly.  In the very rare case a class does not fill with the minimum number of participants (50%) we may choose to postpone, reschedule or cancel classes.  Should this occur, we will provide the option to participants to apply their class registration fee toward the postponed or rescheduled class, an alternative class or provide a full refund.

SEEKING: New detection practice locations!

Quinte Canine Scent Detection Students (aka the Super Sniffers) are looking for new and different locations to practice the amazing sport of scent detection! Once students complete classes they are able to join the Super Sniffers (which is a practicing club) and we schedule 3-4 practices per month.

If you have a location (this could be a business, building, home, cottage, etc.) that you would allow our amazing dogs to practice in please let us know by email quintecanine@hotmail.com. It is important for the dogs to get into new locations as often as possible to keep their skills sharp, learn new skills and build confidence.  We try to only reuse the same location once every 6 months.

Practices are normally held on Wednesday (daytime) and Sunday (daytime) but other days can be worked out.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and get a firsthand look at how it all works!

Myth Bust!
by Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI

I need to be an alpha leader to my dog so he knows who’s boss

Much of today's theories on dog behaviour and how it mirrors Wolf behaviour is founded in very inappropriate and inaccurate observations completed in the 1930’s and 40’s which painted wolf’s as competitive blood thirsty animals who were all trying to be the ‘top dog’. Domesticated dog behaviour was then based on these misunderstood observations. Today we know better and can better understand how the different categories of canid's work in different ways to live cooperatively or singularly in harmony and with as little conflict as possible.  Pssst, a hint: your dog is not a wolf.

Advocates for force-based techniques and other physical punishments will often talk about building a relationship and respect with a dog as excuses to use these methods. If a person you thought you could trust began forcing you to do things you did not want to do or had little to no motivation to do, then caused you physical harm for non-compliance; how would you feel about that person and your relationship? Would you trust that person? The likely answer is no, but you may in fact begin to tip-toe around the person, feel fearful and easily spooked in their presence.  Now place yourself in that person’s shoes and your dog into yours.  Is that the type of relationship you want to have with your dog? Compliance based on fear and intimidation?

You already control your dogs food, environment, socialization opportunities and schedule, how much more in control do you need? You are not a dog and your dog certainly know this so thinking that he/she is in some sort of ‘battle for top spot’ with you will do nothing to help your own mindset when it comes to your dogs behaviour.

Being a leader to your dog doesn’t need to mean harshness, force, intimidation or pain. But it can certainly mean boundaries, patience, teaching and guidance.  Teaching a dog through motivation to respond to a situation, stimulus or cue can be fun, easy and very rewarding, without the risk of loss of trust or relationship.
