VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Scent Trial and Canine Good Neighbour Evaluation
If you are able to help with any of the following events please email quintecanine@hotmail.com
Trial Volunteers Needed! - April
Quinte Canine is proud to announce that we will be holding another Sporting Detection Dogs Association (SDDA) Trial right here in the Quinte region (Frankford for this upcoming one to be exact)!!!!
Sporting Detection is the fun and competitive version of scent detection such as for narcotics, termites or explosives, and is also known as “nosework”. The dog must locate any and all hidden target scents within a designated area and alert the handler to the location. It is a true partnership sport in which both ends of the leash must rely on one another. Our local trial hosts dog and handler teams from all over Ontario, Quebec and even the USA. This fun sport can be enjoyed by ANY dog and some of our local teams are really sniffing out the top spots.
In order to hold these fun events, we need volunteers. We are looking for anyone that can commit to one or two days to help out.
The trial this spring will be held at 72 Wolfe St. Frankford.
We will need volunteers for the following:
Saturday April 21st - 8:00am - approx 5:00pm
Sunday April 22nd - 8:00am - approx 5:00pm
(the end time can vary depending on the number of entries received)
Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) Volunteers Needed - May!
Quinte Canine will once again be hosting a Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) evaluation at this years Barks By The Bay Canine Festival in Trenton on Saturday May 26th!
Volunteers will be needed for a variety of positions such as test assistants and registration helpers. Help will be needed from 8:00am to approximately 4:00pm. Come be a part of welcoming well mannered canine neighbours to our community. SMILE!
It's National Pet Dental Health Month
Did you know that February is National Pet Dental Health Month! Yes, it seems there is a month for everything now. But dont discard the information just yet, your dog could be suffering in silence or pay for the lack of knowledge down the road.
Bad breath and tooth discolouration can be a sign of serious disease in our pets, which may affect their kidneys, livers, and hearts. Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets, with most dogs and cats becoming affected by age 3. Although most know that yellowing of the teeth and bad breath are signs of a possible serious oral health concern for your dog, it is important to remember that ongoing maintenance and prevention are worth more than the tooth fairy can even imagine.
"Approximately 70% of cats above the age of four years and 80% of dogs above the age of three years have some degree of oral / periodontal disease. Red gums, bad breath and discoloration of teeth are all signs of periodontal disease. " According to Foster Park Pet Hospital staff team.
Be sure to have a conversation with your veterinarian about your dogs oral health each year when you complete your check up. But be sure to have your pups pearly whites checked sooner if you experience any of the following:
- extra teeth or retained baby teeth
- teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar (be sure to inspect along the gum-line)
- abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
- reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- pain in or around the mouth
- bleeding from the mouth
- swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth
- broken or loose teeth
- bad breath (new or worsening)
Be sure to regularly brush your dogs teeth. This is the most effective way to keep their smile healthy and may reduce the frequency of the need for veterinary dental cleaning. Prevention is not only the best way to help your best friend out, but can also save you very costly dental bills down the road. A simple piece of gauze wrapped around your finger tip can even act a very effect and easier 'toothbush' for your dog.
If you do need to have your veterinarian intervene for your dog (tooth removals, cleaning, etc.); procedures, in some cases, can be coupled with other procedures such as spay/neuter, which may help to reduce the overall cost of anesthesia and one more procedure for your dog! For example if your dog is having a tooth extraction or neuter, having a oral cleaning during the same procedure may reduce stress on your dog.
Check with your veterinarian today to see if they have any recognition for National Pet Dental Health Month. Some veterinarians offer discounts, packages and even some free services during the month of February! Each time your dog makes you smile, please keep in mind that their smile it worth it too!
Does your dog hate having his/her teeth brushed? Does he/she struggle and bite at the brush? Don't forget that we can help you work through a desensitization and training program for your needs. Having a willing canine partner that enjoys oral health routines is possible!
