October Newsletter!
As we start to enter fall (the real one and not another one of those fake falls), it means things will be getting busier for classes. It also means that getting sick is more frequent. Along with COVID-19, other ailments like the common cold and flu are starting to emerge more frequently. We cannot stress enough how important it is for everyone’s health and to reduce strain on our health care system, to stay home if you are sick! We now have the option to ‘Zoom in’ to class and watch and learn live if you need to stay home to avoid risking others people’s health. If you are sick, stay home and email us right away so we can arrange the virtual classroom for you.
We also have some fun new features at Quinte Canine! Along with our nice new building sign, our new sound system has recently been installed! This not only helps to hear better but we have also installed an FM transmitter within the building to provide extra help to those having a hard time hearing. To connect to this system, you just need to bring with you a small portable radio with headphones and tune into our station to hear directly (we will be purchasing loaner radios shortly).
It is sad for us to announce this month that we have decided to postpone our planned Grand Opening celebration (which was scheduled for October 17th). With rising numbers of COVID-19 we feel it is best to wait to hold an even bigger and better celebration in the future. Keep your eyes peeled to the newsletter in the spring for more details as we hope you can join us.
If you have been thinking about joining a certain class or would like to purchase a gift certificate for a class for a loved one, now is the time. We have been beating off our accounting department for a while now and postponing as much and as long as possible over the past few years, but we cannot wait any longer. There will be a small increase in our class fees as of January 1, 2021 (see upcoming class descriptions below). We have done everything possible to ensure this increase is as minimal as possible. You will still find the same great value you have come to know and expect, with the comfort of knowing we provide a state of the art community centre for dog people. With most of our classes being 1 hour each week for a full 6 sessions you can still trust we will be there for your training needs.
As always, stay safe and keep those tails wagging!
Your friend,

Job in Animal Care
By Olivia Rodrguez - Quinte Canine College Placement Student - Durham College
In the world of animal care, there are many different job titles. Between a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Behaviourist, Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), Veterinary Technician (VT), and Animal Care Attendants (ACA), keeping everything straight can be a bit of a challenge. That being said, each of these positions comes with its own unique set of duties and training required, and a basic understanding of each position makes it much easier to remember who’s who.
A Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) is the most well-known job in the animal care field. A lot of training is required to be a vet. First, at least two years of pre-veterinary university, then four years getting a university degree in veterinary medicine, and lastly, they must become licensed by the CVO (the College of Veterinarians of Ontario) to legally practice. Some duties of a veterinarian are examining animals, diagnosing and treating disease and injury, preforming surgeries, dentistry, and advising clients on caring for their pet. Often veterinarians specialize in either large or small animals, while others specialize in disciplines such as oncology, reptiles, livestock, surgery, etc. Many vets will work in private practice, own a clinic or work for themselves doing house calls, but there are many different ways to practice veterinary medicine.
A veterinary behaviourist is a specialized DVM, requiring all the education and training that DVM’s require, but with added specialized training in animal behaviour. Veterinary Behaviourists have extensive knowledge of veterinary medicine as well as animal behaviour, while most regular DVM’s knowledge on animal behaviour is more limited. They work to manage behaviour problems by finding the root cause and resolving it, whether it be medical or psychological.
A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) works under the supervision of a DVM, with many important duties such as obtaining and processing radiographs and ultrasounds, preparing and administering medication or treatment (as prescribed by DVM), giving and monitoring anaesthesia, assisting in surgery, diagnostic laboratory testing, and the list goes on! To be a RVT, you must attend a two-year technician college program and complete the veterinary technician certification exam. Following that, you must complete yearly continued education hours, as well as pay a membership fee to remain registered.
The biggest difference between an RVT and a VT is registration. A VT (vet tech) either did not take or pass the certification exam, did not complete the yearly continued education hours, or did not pay to remain registered. There are certain jobs within a clinic that a vet tech cannot legally do without being registered such as being an anesthetist for a surgery patient. Despite this, there are vet techs out there who learned on the job and aren’t registered or choose to remain unregistered as a personal choice.
An Animal Care Attendant will often assist vets and vet techs. Their duties include preforming restraint, animal husbandry, client education, and basic healthcare skills such as preparing medications and supplies, monitoring vital signs, common diagnostic lab testing, etc. There is no education required to be an ACA, but it is recommended to complete a 1 to 2-year animal care or vet assistant college program.
While each of these job titles come with a unique set of training and duties, they all have something in common; they all require passion and dedication to caring for animals. A passion for animals is the strongest starting point one can have in a career in animal care, regardless of the job!
