Letter from the Editor

  Dear friends,
March means spring is just around the corner! And daylight savings time is fast approaching. Mind me while I do a little happy dance!

With spring around the corner, it is a time to grow and flourish. We are planning some very exciting growth this spring and cannot wait to share with you all the flourishing we plan to do! But alas, it will need to wait just a little longer; because with any growth, nurturing takes time. So stay tuned for some exciting announcements in future newsletters.  In the mean time why not join us for some fun in a trick class or even brush off the snow from winter and join an upcoming Basic Obedience class to get back into a good rhythm.

Classes are limited in size to provide dogs and handlers with maximum learning opportunities.  Because they are limited they often fill quickly.  In the very rare case a class does not fill with the minimum number of participants (50%) we may choose to postpone, reschedule or cancel classes.  Should this occur, we will provide the option to participants to apply their class registration fee toward the postponed or rescheduled class, an alternative class or provide a full refund.

Myth Bust!

Puppies should be fully vaccinated before socializing
The period from about 3 weeks to approximately 16 weeks of age for any puppy, regardless of breed, is an extremely important time period, that can help make or break their character, behaviour and temperament as they grow into adults.
During this critical period of socialization puppies should be exposed to as many new people, sights, sounds, animals and environments as possible in a fun and positive way. If done correctly, this socialization can be done without overwhelming the puppy or causing fear. This can help to build a puppy into a happy well-adjusted and confident dog long term. Because this critical period is so short and many fear diseases, it leaves handlers in a risk/reward conundrum.  The sad fact is that behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under 3 years of age due to euthanasia.
Often a puppies final set of vaccinations are given at approximately 16 weeks of age. If socialization is left until this time a puppy is often past the window of opportunity and this can have long-term lasting negative effects on him/her.  For this reason, most current and well-respected authorities on the topic will recommend the process of socialization begin right away.  Most puppies can join a well-run, puppy socialization class as early as 8 weeks. Choosing a puppy socialization class that follows best practices in disease/illness prevention, with a focus on positive reinforcement and that ensures all puppies in class are healthy and up to date on vaccinations can be easy.
