April Newsletter!

  Dear friends,

In our last newsletter we gave you a hint of a very exciting announcement to come to Quinte Canine; and since our newsletter comes out on the first of each month we felt it best to hold off until May 1 for our announcement to prevent people from thinking it was an April Fools joke.  New classes will be starting in June and we hope to announce those in the May 1st newsletter so stay tuned!

Due to the current State of Emergency within Ontario, businesses such as our are being forced to close. Because of this we are switching our classes to a ‘virtual classroom’ (students can see and hear me live working with a dog and I can see and hear them live working with their dogs).  With that said we hope we can get back to in person classes, with precautions made to keep everyone safe, as soon as possible.  The soonest we would be able to return to the classroom at this time is April 14th but it will be up to the Government and what they announce at that time. With the constant changes we do not know what the near future will bring we are doing everything in our power to accommodate students.

With puppies it is critical that we work on their important socialization as soon as possible due to the window of opportunity closing so quickly.  Dog to dog play only accounts for 10% of actual socialization so we feel it is critical that we capitalize on the 90% during these difficult times. For all dogs, a concern that can arise from being home so much is separation issues developing once we begin to return to the new normal and are not home as often. Please remember to crate your dog and leave the home for various different periods of time over the coming weeks to ensure they remain calm and happy to be alone; this could be a drive or even a walk to ensure you are following social distancing rules.

A very special additional message to you all can be found here: https://youtu.be/Lqu4BCYvQK4

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest heartfelt thanks to you all for your support, encouragement and dedication during these past couple of weeks of difficult times.  With the State of Emergency being declared in Ontario we opted to help keep everyone safer by changing classes, at least temporarily, over to virtual online class rooms. This has been a new thing for everyone, myself included, and it was a a little scary at first. Although I am a social person, in person is always my preference, it has been so very much fun!

With very uncertain times ahead, I have felt mostly support, encouragement and excitement from you all as we move forward together to try to make the best of the situation. Your dedication to your dogs is truly astounding and your support and kindness has been a true gift.  So with such open arms (long distance hugs, still practicing social distancing so no real hugs for now):

THANK YOU!

Your friend,
Yvonne Ferguson,

Myth Bust!
by Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI

Dogs are colour-blind

The origin of this myth may be unknown but it could be easy to believe, given that when you put on your new stunning blue shirt, you dog does not have the ‘wow’ look your friends may have.  This isn’t because your dog can’t see the colour but more often then not, your dog does not find visual pleasure in the same things you do. Now, if you walked out of the closet with a moving squirrel, your pooch may certainly give you the ‘wow’ look. This is because, although you love your new shirt, you dog likely could care less.

In all animals, the photoreceptors within the eye determine how the animal sees colour, which colours they see, and the shades.  Humans have 3 different colour sensitive cone cells (red, blue and green), our canine friends only have 2 (yellow and blue). Many domestic animals have just these 2, such as the cat, dog, cow and horses.  If you think our household friends got the short end of the stick and we humans are far superior, think again. Some bird and fish actually have 4 colour sensitive cone cells which allow them to see all the beautiful colours within the ultraviolet spectrum.

Taking a look at the diagram below, gives us humans a ‘glimpse’ (of course pun intended) into how our dogs see the world.
So, was your dog being silly when he passed by the red Kong you threw into the long green grass or did he actually miss it in a blur? I guess we will never know, at least I like to keep thinking he was just being silly to make me smile.
