Letter from the Editor

  Dear friends,
With winters official arrival coming this month, it certainly was a surprise to get a rude dumping ahead of time.  When will old man winter learn that some of us wish he would not visit so soon?

December brings no only a time of celebration of friends and family but also of you, our clients.  That is why we hold our annual Holiday Potluck Party, for you! Now dont get me wrong, a part of it is certainly for me to be together with all of you but it is also about our shelter and the season of giving.  We hope you have marked your calendar and RSVPed already, but if not there is still a few days left.  We promise, it will be one fun evening you will be glad you did not miss.
With December we also begin to think of all of the new things that the new year brings.  New opportunities, new friendships and new skills to learn!  It really is a great time to teach your dog something new while you grow your skills as a handler.  Did you know we also offer gift certificates!  Hard to buy for person in your life but who is also a dog lover, give them the gift of fun this year and order a custom gift certificate for Quinte Canine, available in any amount!  It is the best time of year as well to purchase a class as unfortunately our class fees will experience a small increase on January 1, 2019 - see information below upcoming classes for more information.  But there is still time to purchase classes at the current fee so dont wait!
Do you know someone who has added (or is adding) a new puppy or dog to their family this holiday season, do them a favor and forward this newsletter to them to spread some holiday cheer .

Your friend,
Yvonne Ferguson,

To register for any of the above classes visit:
Once payment is made and the registration form has been received, we will process your class enrollment and send you an email with all of the details and class handouts.

Previous students: if you have completed a registration form in the past you do not need to complete one again unless your information has changed or this is a new dog. Please just email us to register.

Classes are limited in size to provide dogs and handlers with maximum learning opportunities.  Because they are limited they often fill quickly.  In the very rare case a class does not fill with the minimum number of participants (50%) we may choose to postpone, reschedule or cancel classes.  Should this occur, we will provide the option to participants to apply their class registration fee toward the postponed or rescheduled class, an alternative class or provide a full refund.

Price Change - Effective January 1, 2019

After many years of pride in our prices we are forced to complete a price increase for 2019.
Our Puppy class fee will remain the same but classes such as Basic Obedience, Scent Detection and Trick classes will be experiencing a minor increase in fee.  This fee increase will not take place until January 1, 2019 and we will honor our current fee structure until then. We regret that rapidly rising costs of operation (insurance, location rental, continuing education, etc.) necessitate our increase. We have made every attempt to avoid the increase, but we refuse to compromise on quality of service or safety.

We hope to continue our excellent relationship with our clients, and assure you our quality of service will be reflected in our increase. Watch for new opportunities to save as we roll out some discount and benefit programs in the new year! We wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your business and we look forward to the privilege to be of service in the future.

Weather Policy

In the event of severe weather, where holding class would place you at risk due to driving conditions, we may cancel classes and extend the end date to ensure you receive your full sessions. We will contact you, at the telephone number(s) you have provided on your registration form, at minimum 1 hour prior to class beginning to inform you of a cancellation.

We understand that some students come from far out of town including 60+ minutes driving.  All weather related cancellations will be determined by the weather in the area of classes.  It is important to note that the weather in your location maybe very different from the weather in the class location.  It is up to you to make the ultimate decision to attend class if they are running.

It is a good idea to pencil in an extra week of class for your sessions, just in case we do have to extend the end date due to weather.  This will prevent you from possibly making alternative plans on your graduation night.

Please be cautious on the roads this year, give yourself plenty of extra time and be safe!

Along with Yvonne being present and helping to understand communication, handlers are expected to be diligent in observation of dog communication during sessions.

Come and play, ask doggie questions and learn more about dog to dog body language! Located at the Belleville hall. Dog must have current vaccinations on record with us (if you are not sure please ask and I will check). Sessions are designed for dog and people friendly dogs.

There are 2 play dates scheduled for the upcoming months:
Thursday December 27th 4:30pm - 5:30pm
Thursday February 7th 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Play classes are $10 (including tax) and this is due at the time of the session but RSVP is required.  Mark your calendars and make sure to let us know you are coming by emailing!  We also have a Quinte Canine Micro Dogs Facebook group you can join by clicking here.

Finding a Breeder - Part 3
Alphabet Soup

by Yvonne Ferguson, CPDT-KSA, CTDI
This article is going to help you learn much more about all those nice looking letters (often indicating titles) that you often find before and after breeding dogs names in the breeder world.  With the holiday season and so many great group classes on the go I have to admit I have not finished this article to my personal satisfaction.  So with that said, I will continue to work on it throughout December (as usual, consulting some amazing breeders along the way) and hope to have it out to you in the January 1 issue to kick off 2019!

Quinte Canine Scent Detection Students (aka the Super Sniffers) are looking for new and different locations to practice the amazing sport of scent detection! Once students complete classes they are able to join the Super Sniffers (which is a practicing club) and we schedule 3-4 practices per month.

If you have a location (this could be a business, building, home, cottage, etc.) that you would allow our amazing dogs to practice in please let us know by email It is important for the dogs to get into new locations as often as possible to keep their skills sharp, learn new skills and build confidence.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and get a firsthand look at how it all works!
