Looking Back on 2020

What a year it’s been! We got off to a good start with an exhibit and sale at Pictures Plus in Kailua-Kona, and then the Studio Tour in February.  Here are some highlights, below.  Since then, our artists have been hunkered down in their studios, creating more beauty for you to enjoy. You will see some fine examples presented in the online auction.

Don't forget the SOKO Facebook page. It features a different artist each week, as well as news about events and sales that all the individual artists have coming up. You’ll see the very latest in fine art in various media, all created right here on Hawai’i Island. Check it out and be sure to “like” what you like.
Upcoming SOKO Events
SOKO’s signature event, the ARTISTS STUDIO TOUR, will not be an in-person event this year because of COVID-19. Instead, we will hold an ONLINE AUCTION FROM FEBRUARY 13-20, 2021. If you are receiving this, you will soon receive an invitation to join us. Plans are being finalized now, and we expect to have seventeen (17) artists participating, with around 50 unique and beautiful items for sale, all made on Hawai’i Island. Please tell your friends!

In addition, a number of the SOKO artists will be participating in the BEST OF KONA FESTIVAL, which this year will be a one-day, in-person event, planned for Saturday, April 10, 2021, on the lawn and area surrounding the Kona Inn shopping center in Kailua-Kona. You’ll hear more about this is upcoming newsletters. Please mark your calendars now!

And you can always make appointments to visit our artists and purchase their art, either in person or online. You can also see their new work on the SOKO Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SOKOartists or the SOKO website at www.sokoartists.com, where contact info is available for each artist.

JAN BOVARD Sculpts in Ceramics

I have been playing with clay since 1973. It is my passion and my reward for all the other things that “must be done.” My work goes all the way from large sculptural images to 500 cup gallery exhibitions. I work in stoneware and porcelain. Propane fired to cone 10 in a 24x36x4ft. car kiln.

I’ve traveled to 38 countries, some of them twice. All the while looking at the cultural ceramics works. Lived in Japan for six months working at the Shigaraki International Ceramic Institute. My work has more of an Asia slant than most American “potters”.

I have had numerous exhibitions here in Kona and in Hilo. At this point I have a gallery at my studio that is open by appointment and/or special tours.  Visitors are welcome. I love to talk “shop”.

I do take students that are serious about their work.

I have lived on the island of Hawaii for sixty years. I live on a seven acre macadamia nut, avocado farm on which I have planted all the 180 trees, and built all the buildings on vacant land.

I am a Buddhist and also involved in the Hawaiian culture.  My children are Hawaiian Chinese.

Live with ALOHA, Jan

KATHLEEN T. CARR Inspires With Photography

Kathleen T. Carr has been a fine art and professional photographer for over fifty years. She has worked with a variety of techniques and alternate processes over the years, but her vision remains constant—"to experience the radiance in all life and have my images express that radiance tangibly enough so that others may see and feel it, too. Caring deeply about nature, especially when I see such environmental destruction in the world, I want my photography to inspire people to honor the earth and all who live upon it.”

Her current passions are digital infrared, landscapes, nature, photographing and filming dolphins, whales and other life underwater, and the digital darkroom. She still teaches photography and the digital darkroom privately.

Kathleen received a BFA in Photography from Ohio University in 1970, and then studied extensively with Minor White and worked for Aperture, a renowned photography quarterly. She received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in 1991 and her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally, purchased for private collections, and has appeared in numerous books and periodicals. Her books include Dolphins: Kindred Spirits; Polaroid Transfers; Polaroid Manipulations (Amphoto Books 1997 & 2002), and To Honor the Earth (HarperSanFrancisco, 1991).
