Notes from the Editor

Aloha friends of SOKO. All the SOKO artists have been busy in their studios, creating new work for you to enjoy when we hold our Studio Tour, February 26-27, 2022. We are hoping to be able to do a pop-up event before Christmas, but due to the rapidly evolving COVID situation on our Island, we do not have firm plans as of this writing. Nevertheless, we all do have work for sale; just contact individual artists through their own websites, or at www.sokoartists.com. As soon as we are able to schedule an event, we will let you know via this newsletter.

Featured Artists
This month’s features artists are Kevin Spitze and Kim Thompson.

KEVIN SPITZE
The Varied Landscapes of our Beautiful World

A life-long artist, starting way back before kindergarten, continuing on into all my school years. Later in life, my focus became landscape painting, urban landscapes primarily, in Los Angeles, from the early ‘90s until the beginning of 2017. 2017 was a major life change, with our move to the Big Island. The very urban landscapes of LA were replaced by the varied natural scenes of the island of Hawaii. My work has been informed by my travels and other life experiences, and is in the media of oil, some watercolor, pastel and pen and ink.

KIM THOMPSON
Science and Art Woven Together to Create Beauty

A retired school administrator from Oregon, Kim began weaving in her late 20s. She makes her hand-woven creations on 4-shaft and 8-shaft looms, weaving everything from scarves and shawls, napkins and tablemats to towels, runners and exquisite wall hangings. Some of her pieces feature iridescent fine silk that changes color with the light. Others showcase textured weaves with wavy designs or double weaves with gradated patterns.

“I’m always trying to figure out how to do complicated patterns on the loom,” she said. “It’s very mathematical. It’s like a puzzle and you have to figure it out.” “It’s a physical art,” Kim added. “You have to be curious and like to do things with your hands.”

Kim’s fiber art has earned awards at annual statewide-juried exhibitions presented by Hawai‘i Craftsmen in Honolulu. An active member of the Big Island chapter of the Hawai‘i Handweavers’ Hui, Kim enjoys attending regular workshops taught by visiting weavers.
