Last month, Engineering News-Record ( ENR) named Catarina Carvalho (’18SPS, Sustainability Management) a “National Top 20 Under 40” professional in recognition of her exceptional industry portfolio and rapid professional growth in the design and construction field. Carvalho, who is an associate for sustainable design firm Arup, was selected from nearly 600 nominees from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
She’s also deeply committed to helping to build a supportive sustainability community of professionals. As an alumna, she has served as a mentor to SPS students across programs. Her advice for current students? Read more.

- Dustin Droullard (’18SPS, Information and Knowledge Strategy) recently joined the cybersecurity company Recorded Future as a senior intelligence consultant.
- Bennie F. Johnson (’14SPS, Strategic Communication) was announced as the CEO of the American Marketing Association last month.
- Eric Rodriguez (’20SPS, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution) was promoted to detective investigator with the NYPD earlier in the year.
- Cameron Smith (’13SPS, Sports Management) is the head of client success and community for Kunik, a work culture start-up founded by fellow Columbia graduates Elizabeth Gulliver (’13BUS) and Josh Horowitz (’13BUS).
- Maya Sorini's (’20SPS, Narrative Medicine) first poetry book, The Bonheap in the Lion's Den, won the 2023 Press 53 Award for poetry and will be in print in April 2023.

Cynthia Germanotta, president of the Born This Way Foundation—which she co-founded with her daughter Lady Gaga in 2012—joined Nonprofit Management lecturer Kim McCall’s Communications and Marketing for Nonprofits Class as a guest speaker. The foundation “supports the mental health of young people and works with them to build a kinder and braver world.” Said Germanotta, “I am so grateful to have been a guest speaker at the Communications and Marketing for Nonprofits class as a part of Columbia University School of Professional Studies’ Nonprofit Management master’s program. Thank you all for having me!”
- Steven Raga, a Strategic Communication course associate, recently received the Baruch Alumni Changemakers Award and The Outstanding Filipino Americans Presidential Award.
- Matt Sawyer, Strategic Communication lecturer, released Make It in America—How International Companies and Entrepreneurs Can Successfully Enter and Scale in U.S. Markets (Wiley).
- Tejwansh Anand, Technology Management lecturer, co-authored Blockchain and Ethereum Smart Contract Solution Development (Apress).

Students and Alumni Build Linkages to Innovate and Give Back

SPS alumni and students teamed up to create the winning pitch in the third annual Greater Good Challenge, sponsored by the Beba Foundation and hosted by the Career Design Lab.
Lavar Matthews (’23SPS, Human Capital Management); Lacie Pierre (’23SIPA); Nile Pierre; Sofia Rinvil (’17SPS, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution); and Danna Lennon-Thomas (’18SPS, Nonprofit Management) won $10,000 in seed money for their social-good start-up, The Wash House. The Wash House is a Mississippi-based center that offers a coworking space with free internet for underrepresented professionals and a Community Innovation Center that designs courses to “alleviate the deep skills gap that besets underserved communities.”
