Small Business of the Month:
Eastern Shore Art Center

Eastern Shore Art Center
401 Oak Street, Fairhope, AL 36532

Ways the business is making a difference in the community.
The Eastern Shore Art Center (ESAC) hosts First Friday Art Walk each month free to the public, with complimentary food and beverages while visitors view exhibits in their five galleries. The Art Center also hosts hundreds of arts instructions classes and workshops, and offers many benefits to area artists, including exhibitions, teaching opportunities, and professional instruction. Many in our community are unaware that ESAC hosts its own annual Outdoor Art Show in conjunction with the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival each year. Attracting artists from around the country, this show will celebrate its 50th year in 2022. ESAC's popular Summer Art Bash kid's camp sold out this year! In the course of the pandemic, ESAC applied for numerous grants and was awarded 100% of the requests, including being awarded a $90,000 grant from Impact 100 Baldwin County for much-needed updates to their academy, including touch-free automatic doors and a new ADA compliant handicapped accessible ramp for the teaching academy, as well as studio updates. ESAC is a treasure for the Eastern Shore Community, attracting thousands of visitors and students each year. Operating with only a staff of three full-time employees, and having suffered losses from cancellations due to the pandemic, they are now proud to add this month an additional full-time employee as Director of Finance and Administration. We are also especially proud of their 40+ volunteers who make all of our events and programming possible.

How this small business is growing.

This year the Eastern Shore Art Center is engaging more with the community than ever before. The Studio is hosting their recitals here. They are now the venue for the Bay Area Improv's Radio Show theater programs. They are forming a new "Kiln Concert Series" to be hosted outdoors at their Anagama kiln. Each year they host a month-long "The Art of..." event featuring multiple educational lectures, arts programming and events, culminating in a Saturday family event. They collaborate with entities such as Five Rivers Delta Center, Weeks Bay, area Garden Clubs, the Gulf Coast Zoo, the Monarch Conservancy and more. Their 3rd annual Plein Air Fairhope event brings 40 artists from 5 states to the city to paint and draw our area for four days and includes an exhibit for the artists. ESAC is growing with collaborative events, new programming and increased staffing.

Progress Reported in Goal to Add 500,000 Newly Credentialed Workers by 2025

Alabama leaders say 45% of the state’s workforce now has an educational certificate or degree beyond high school, representing progress in the goal of adding 500,000 newly credentialed people to the workforce by 2025 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ed Castile, deputy secretary of the Workforce Development Division in the Alabama Department of Commerce, told Alabama Daily News the pandemic has even helped in some respects in reaching the half-million goal.

“Oddly enough, it hurt us, but then it helped us,” Castile said. “The sad news is a lot of people lost their jobs, but that helped us a little bit by getting people into programs to give them a credential which added them to our numbers. But it also got them a job that could also not be so affected by something like the pandemic.”

Gov. Kay Ivey in 2018 set the ambitious 500,000 goal as part of her “Success Plus” initiative, which if accomplished would bring the level of work-age Alabamians with post high school training or degrees from about 43% in 2016 to 60% by April 30, 2025.

The ES Chamber Presents
Lemonade Day 2021

Lemonade Day is coming to the Eastern Shore on November 6, 2021!

Help us empower today’s youth to be tomorrow’s entrepreneurs!

Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand.

The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow.

Each child that registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.
