Happy Holidays!

Dear Chicanx/Latinx Alumni,

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! As we approach the end of the year, this global giving holiday helps nonprofits like UCB CLAA raise critical funds for the year ahead.

As we reflect on the year and the holiday season we have much to be grateful for. Through alumni support we were able to: provide much-needed emergency grants to help our students during COVID-19, scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students through our Kapp Scholars Fund (see some of the Thank You's from our scholars below), and alumni panelists and mentors for our students and alumni to help them succeed. We could not do this without your support, and we look forward to 2021, where we will continue to support our growing UCB CLAA community of students and alumni as Cal progresses to become an HSI.

There are multiple ways you can help support our work and make a difference.
  • You can make a tax-deductible donation to the Joe Kapp and Family Scholarship Fund. This year there are time-limited tax provisions in the CARES Act for donations made through December 31, 2020, so those who take the standard deduction may deduct up to $300 in qualified charitable contributions on their 2020 federal tax return. Normally no deduction is permitted (under the 2017 federal tax law change).
  • You can support our programming for students and alumni by renewing or becoming a member of UCB CLAA, for only $10/month.
  • You can support UCB CLAA when shopping Amazon and using our link through AmazonSmile. You'll find the exact same low prices, vast selection, and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com
with the added bonus of supporting UCB CLAA! (If you are a frequent shopper save the link to your browser toolbar)
  • You can sign up to be a volunteer to share your skill sets and experience with our students and alumni.

We wish you and your loved ones a safe and well holiday season, and we thank you for your continued support of our Cal Bears!

En comunidad,

Joe Kapp Scholars

Thank you all, this scholarship has alleviated a ton of stress during these unprecedented times for my family and I. My name is Alex Rojas and I am a Mexican-American from Richmond, Ca, sophomore, studying Civil & Environmental Engineering. Coming from a toxic environment and being able to receive recognition for the accomplishments I have done for my family, myself, and my community is humbling. I will never switch up on my culture, thank you CLAA for giving me this spotlight. The true hero are the people reading this, you all can do great things in life... nomas, echale ganas. GO BEARS! -
Alexsander Rojas, East Bay Chapter
I want to thank the CLAA San Diego Chapter for awarding me with the 2020 CLAA Scholarship! As a first-generation student and one of few pursuing a PhD, it is comforting to know that I still have the support of my Latinx community. It takes a village and when one of us succeeds we all succeed! Quiero mostrar que si se puede y inspirar a otros estudiantes para que sigan luchando! Muchisimas gracias!- Areidy Beltran, San Diego Chapter
I am truly grateful to have been selected as the recipient of the CLAA Sacramento Chapter Scholarship. As a first-generation to college student of Mexican parents, I never imagined a Master's in Public Health degree would be possible. Receiving this scholarship motivates me to focus more time on my academic studies as being a first year graduate student comes with financial burdens. I am appreciative of knowing that CLAA supports many Chicanx/Latinx students like me at Cal. Gracias CLAA! - Erica Martinez, Sacramento Chapter
I am Jessi William Fernandez, a formerly incarcerated Chicano leader who has overcome different obstacles and challenges throughout life. The decision to return to higher education and attend UC Berkeley was not just a necessary step to assure myself a stable future but also to find a purpose in my life that is positive. I want to extend my utmost reverence to the Joe Kapp and Family Foundation and express my deepest gratitude for supporting my educational journey by awarding me the Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) Scholarship 2020. Tlazocamati. - Jessi Fernandez, Los Angeles Chapter
I feel like a lucky guy to not only be given the privilege to study at a university, but to have an organization such as CLAA believe in me. Thank you for your support and I pray that one day I can return the favor toward the next generation of UC Berkeley Chicanx/Latinx students. - Matthew Zarate, Monterey Bay Chapter
I am a re-entry student from Santa Ana College in SoCal. Coming to Cal has reinforced the importance of higher education and the positive impact we can make as an organized community. Continuing my studies and public service while dealing through financial and educational challenges would not be possible without support and generous sponsors and organizations like the CLAA. This scholarship gives me the opportunity to allocate more time towards my work in the community, continuing to break down barriers through providing community members knowledge, resources, and connecting them with allies.- Esteban Salazar, Orange County Chapter
Thank you for investing in students from the Central Valley. Throughout my time at Cal, my community has been what has pulled me through some often difficult times. Now as I finish up my journey at this university, my community is demonstrating how united we are and how much faith there is in the students that hail from the Central Valley. I am proud to be a first-generation student from a hardworking Oaxacan family. I am proud to be graduating from the number one public university in the world, and I am forever grateful for my community that never stops believing in me. - Patsy Mejia, San Joaquin Valley Chapter
CLAA has provided me the opportunity to focus on attaining a master’s degree in Social Work and has eliminated financial barriers that were present in my educational journey. After graduation, I aim to assist the Latinx community by creating greater access to resources and services in efforts to create positive generational change. I believe that helpful acts can change an individual’s life trajectory and CLAA has positively impacted my life trajectory. Thank you again for the support and for investing in my future. - Evelyn Perez, Los Angeles Chapter
