Dear Chicanx Latinx Cal Alumni,
We hope you are safe and well, especially during these difficult times as Covid-19 has impacted so many in our community. We share our condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
As we start the 2021 year, we are excited to see several of our Cal Alumni appointed to leadership roles in the new Biden Administration including Alejandro Mayorkas ’81 as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, the first Latinx and immigrant to lead DHS, and Julie Chavez Rodriguez ’00 as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Go Bears!
We are looking forward to our 2021 Diversity Career & Internship Fair on March 10 from 12:00 – 4:00 pm. If you or employers you know are hiring, we encourage registering for this virtual fair (the deadline is February 24). We expect a great turnout of continuing and graduating students, and employers (already over 50 employers have registered).
Following our great participation and success last year, CLAA will again be welcoming new admits through our hosted virtual yield events in collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Please mark your calendars the last two weeks of April (19-23 and 25-30). We’ll have more details and registration next month. Your participation makes a big difference!
En Comunidad,
Michael Treviño ‘89

Toast to Coach Joe Kapp's birthday with CLAA and Ron Rivera, Washington Football Team's Head Coach. Coach Rivera, an All-American, PAC 10 Football Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl XX Champion, will tell us about playing on the Cal field for Coach Kapp and why Time Magazine named Kapp "The Toughest Chicano" in 1971. Coach Kapp inspired us at Cal as a quarterback, coach, and now by his philanthropy.
Meet co-authors, JJ Kapp and Robert Phelps, of Coach Kapp's biography, who will also discuss Coach Kapp's illustrious life on and off the field.

The Cal Advantage – Haas MBA Program
Streamlined MBA application process for Cal alumni. No test score required.
One of Dean Harrison and program leaders' goals is to reduce barriers and expand pathways of access for historically underrepresented communities into our MBA programs. As such, the increased diversity of their application pool and incoming classes last year inspired Haas, in part, to offer The Cal Advantage program again.
UC Berkeley seniors and alumni of all programs (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to apply to the Haas School of Business for fall 2021 enrollment through Cal Advantage, an exclusive, streamlined application process. GMAT/GRE/EA test scores are optional for Cal alumni. Interested candidates can apply to either the Evening & Weekend or Full-time MBA program.
Last year in the Full-time MBA process, over 20% of the application pool identified as an underrepresented minority, solidly higher than the traditional pool! Learn more...

- Prioritization of Retention and Recruitment
- Campus-wide Communication and Marketing Strategies
- Strengthening Presence, Connectivity, & Inclusiveness
- Expansive communications and marketing plan
The HSI Task Force identified three implementation phases leading to HSI designation by 2027. While HSI designation may be achieved in a shorter time, the recommendations identified through the implementation phases are necessary to foster an ongoing Latinx thriving culture.

UC Berkeley’s Building Name Review Committee unanimously recommended removing Kroeber’s name from the building
UC Berkeley’s Kroeber Hall became the fourth building on campus to be stripped of its name in a year’s time. The decision by Berkeley officials capped a formal review process and was made, in large part, because the building’s namesake — Alfred Louis Kroeber, born in 1876 and the founder of the study of anthropology in the American West — is a powerful symbol that continues to evoke exclusion and erasure for Native Americans. Oscar Dubón, Jr. , Vice Chancellor of Equity and Inclusion, to resume his faculty position as Professor of Materials Science & Engineering effective June 30th
Over the past three and a half years, Oscar has led the Division of Equity & Inclusion and supported the campus community through very challenging times, including a divided nation, wildfires, power outages, our country’s and campus’ racial reckoning, financial instability, and a pandemic. Our CLAA community is especially thankful for Oscar’s leadership as co-chair of the Hispanic Serving Institution Task Force, and for establishing the Chicanx Latinx Standing Committee of faculty, staff, students, and alumni to advise the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
