June Book Club Pick

by Daniel Pink
"Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world."
Why this book is worth reading: This book provides a very in depth look at what truly motivates human behavior. His conclusions will surprise you.  Pink offers that money and tangible rewards are not our true motivators. That intrinsic motivation, driven by our joy, is what will produce results long term. This offers an interesting problem for modern businesses that rely on raises and bonuses to keep employees motivated and in place. Instead, Pink suggests, we tap into what about their work makes them happy and what about their work brings internal satisfaction -- then we capitalize on those areas for long term motivation and retention.  Need more convincing? This book provides psychological studies, along with real life business examples, of how this can be applied.
