At the spring meeting, participants were asked to describe what they see as Shift Zero’s value. The word cloud highlights commonly used words, and below are a few full responses from attendees:
  • Alignment: forging a collective voice for policymakers
  • A place to plan a pathway for a vision to the future - audacious goals
  • Cross fertilization of ideas
  • Aligns technical solutions and advocacy
  • Focuses the work of many orgs to achieve tangible improvements to policy and code
  • Education and awareness of advocacy opportunities
We are so grateful for the people who make this collective impact a reality! There are many opportunities ahead to leverage each other’s work and plan strategically for buildings to be part of the climate solution.

Centering Equity
The magnitude of this transformation necessitates all communities are represented and involved in designing and implementing solutions. As one member emphasized, we’re not going to reduce emissions unless we address equity. Shift Zero will work to make equity a primary and ongoing focus for the organization.

A recent article by ILFI’s Shawn Fisher Hesse poses an important question for each of us to consider in our work to advance zero carbon buildings: "What if instead of treating "sustainability" as the goal of every project, we made solving issues of equity the goal of every project, and "sustainably" was merely the way that we solved the problems?"

Thank you for all you do, and we look forward to your engagement in the work ahead!

Strategic Planning
Shift Zero is developing a strategic plan in the coming months to look holistically at what we need to accomplish together, and the role Shift Zero should play in that work.  If you are interested in participating please contact

Legislative Updates
The Washington State legislative session ended on April 28.

  • Front & Centered summarized the session from an equity and climate justice perspective in this post.
  • The NW Energy Coalition prepared a detailed summary of eight of the climate bills that passed the legislature and next steps in rulemaking, including on HB 1257.
Many of the bills that passed the legislature will have a rulemaking process. Shift Zero will watch for opportunity for input and share them with you as they become available.
