The Washington state commercial energy code cycle is being updated now, and there are a collection of significant proposals on the table to increase efficiency and move buildings covered under the code away from fossil fuels and to heat pumps for space and water heating. The State Building Code Council (SBCC) will vote on September 30 whether or not to put forward these proposals for public comment, and Shift Zero is urging them to move the full package of vetted proposals forward for a deliberative public comment process.

Please consider signing your organizations on to this letter to the SBCC in support of bringing these important code proposals forward for public comment. Sign on by Tuesday, September 28 at 12pm.

For background on the role of state energy code in building decarbonization, read this Shift Zero blog post. As this process moves along, we will provide updates on when and how to comment/engage.

The King County Council will be considering commercial energy code updates later in October that would eliminate most uses of fossil fuels in commercial and large multifamily (4 stories and higher) buildings in unincorporated King County. The code changes are modelled after the energy code Seattle passed in February. Contact Joelle at Climate Solutions if you are interested in giving testimony in a committee hearing, dates TBD. If you live or work in unincorporated King County your testimony would be especially impactful!
