Washington State Energy Code Update
The State Building Code Council held public hearings in September for the residential energy code cycle, and will likely vote on the proposed code November 8. Turnout at the hearings from advocates made clear to the SBCC the importance of code innovation to address the climate crisis. Shift Zero’s letter of support emphasized this code cycle as a springboard for developing the common ground and collaboration necessary to meet the 2031 efficiency targets for new homes in Washington State.

Thank you to Poppy Storm, chair of the Roadmap task force and all the task force members who worked throughout this year to coordinate advocacy, strategy, and technical input!

The Roadmap task force will convene in mid-November to plan next steps. If you’d like to join this meeting, contact

HEAL Act Update: Environmental Justice Task Force
Shift Zero was one of almost 90 organizations endorsing the HEAL (Healthy Environments for All) Act led by Front & Centered. While the HEAL Act did not pass this last session, advocacy in the legislature did result in an Environmental Justice Task Force that will convene over the next year to recommend strategies to ensure state agencies direct their funding, enforcement & planning to communities most impacted by pollution.

Front & Centered is coordinating public comment at these meetings, and individuals and organizations are needed to voice the importance of environmental justice in state policy work. The task force recommendations will inform a HEAL Act in the 2021 session.

There are many ways to participate in Shift Zero!

As an alliance, we leverage technical expertise in the design and construction of high performance buildings along with the strength of advocacy organizations.
