STATE CODE ADVOCACY: COMMENT PERIOD OPENS
The state residential energy code public comment period is now open through October 14! Key efficiency and electrification proposals would require heat pump systems for space and water heating in new homes and low rise multifamily buildings, along with increased ventilation requirements for gas stoves to protect indoor air quality in the ventilation code. These updates will ensure safe, healthy and affordable homes are built right from the start. More information can be found in this FAQ.

How to Engage
Join a Shift Zero energy code webinar on October 4 at 10am, for a deeper dive into the suite of code proposals, the trajectory of the state energy code towards climate and efficiency goals, and how you can advocate in the public comment process. Please RSVP.

Take Action: Sign-on to Letters of Support
Everyone can help engage a broad range of voices. Reach out to your contacts in the following groups and encourage them to support by signing on to the letters linked below, or share action alerts from Climate Solutions and Sierra Club. Green building industry voices are especially needed to share why all-electric new homes are a robust and market-ready solution. Email individual comments directly to sbcc@des.wa.gov, and/or sign on to the group letter of support from the building industry.

Provide Spoken Testimony
Hybrid public hearings with opportunities to testify either in person or via Zoom will be held on September 29 in Yakima and October 14 in Olympia. If you are interested in giving verbal testimony please contact rachel@shiftzero.org.

KING COUNTY PASSES COMMERCIAL CODE UPDATE
On August 23, members of the King County Council voted unanimously to pass a commercial code update that will advance all-electric new construction of commercial and large multifamily buildings. Thank you to everyone who advocated throughout the update process!

The code changes eliminate most uses of fossil-fuel water and space heating equipment in favor of clean electric heat pumps and heat pump hot water heaters, improve building envelopes, increase solar, and require new buildings to be “electric-ready”. These code changes will impact new construction of commercial and large multifamily buildings in unincorporated King County, and go into effect January 1, 2023.
