From the Farmer

There's been quite a shift on the farm this past week.  With new faces and lots of activity on the farm, it seems we have officially emerged from hibernation.  Once our new apprentice, Austin Davis, got himself settled in to his new home here, he wasted no time in getting right to work.  Our good friend and neighbor, Zee, got Austin trained up on chainsaw safety in no time and Austin proceeded to smash up a ton of firewood (literally) to heat the greenhouse next spring.  Next thing I knew, he had single-handedly emptied the chicken coop of it's accumulated winter bedding, two manure spreaders worth, in just a couple of hours, and was already planning cabin improvement projects of his own design.  Clearly I'll have to be on my game to keep up with this eager and capable young farmer!  Tomorrow Caralyn Roeper, apprentice number two, arrives to join the team.  Hooray for apprentices!

The erratic weather - snow then rain, days in the 50's followed by nights in the single digits, has made for lots of ice on the farm, which is fantastic for skating on and for moving logs over, but requires some real traction on feet and hooves alike in order to stay upright.
Winter shoes with caulks - like snow tires for horses -
enable them to go just about anywhere.
Sunday morning hockey!  Believe it or not, this rink will be planted to vegetables in just a couple of short months.
Gus stands patiently in the early morning, forest-filtered light,
waiting to hook to the first log of the day.
