President's Report

The battle against Coronavirus is at a delicate stage. Although the vaccine roll-out is well underway there is still great uncertainty when orienteering will recommence. The announcement this afternoon of the continuation of the current restrictions until at least mid-February further pushes out the resumption. Already the Muir of Dinnet Local event on 7th March has been cancelled and even the final DNC event at Bellwood on 24th February looks very unlikely. Please keep watching the usual sources of information (Maroc website, newsletter, Facebook etc.) for the latest updates on event status.

In contrast, individual coaching and training continues and starting this week there are weekly Orienteering Challenges for Juniors to keep you on your toes, with initial details here in the newsletter.

MapRunF is another excellent way for everyone to get some orienteering practice using your smartphone, with many courses set out on Deeside. I did a course in Banchory last week, running/walking with phone in hand, navigating as if it was a paper map. The instant ‘beep’ when arriving at each control is very satisfying. All the details are on the Maroc, Gramp and SOA websites – give it a try!

Plans are underway for events in April, May and June when we can be a bit more confident on the easing of restrictions, and hopefully some warmer weather. There is also the Scottish Six days event to look forward to in August, for which the period of cheapest entry fees ends on 31st January.

Thanks to everyone who has renewed their membership for 2021 and can join with the committee in anticipating a more fulfilled orienteering year than the last.

Take care, stay safe.

1   Maroc Junior 5 week Challenge - Week 1

Keep up your Orienteering and fitness during lockdown! All Juniors invited to take part!

Can you complete 12 ‘O’ challenges over the next 6 weeks? Here are the first two. There is always one for indoors and one for outdoors. Let us know how you got on to see how you are shaping up. Next week’s challenge will be emailed out next Tuesday.

If you’d like to see your score on the leader board on the MAROC newsletter, email or whatsapp Sue Barrie at or 07763 212261 and/or send a photograph after you have done each challenge. There will be a certificate at the end for everyone that has taken part!

We might be in lockdown, but we can keep exercising body and brain.

Indoor Challenge
What is the best route from A to B?
Get an old orienteering map, another old map or print one from Google maps or Bing maps. Choose 2 controls sites (A and B). Draw your route on the map. Tell a parent/brother/sister why your way is the best way. You can try this for more than one route.
Let Sue know you have done it. Send a photo of your route if you like.
Outdoor Challenge
How fast are you?
Choose an outside space that is away from roads; a playing field, park, the woods or your garden. Ask an adult to come with you and bring a stopwatch. This is your timekeeper.
Record your times for:
100m sprint:
100m skip
25m backwards, 25m forwards

Too easy? Make it an uphill course and repeat 8 times with a minute rest between each time.
Let Sue know you have done it. Send a photo of you doing the challenge if you like.
MAROC training opportunities for 2021

We currently have the following training sessions planned, obviously these can only go ahead if restrictions are eased:

- 21 February (TBC, we are still looking for a lead coach)

- 21 March, technical training at Muir of Dinnet or Cambus O’May (lead coach: Jon Musgrave)

Also, see for the MAROC Junior 6 week challenge in this newsletter. New challenges will be sent out every Tuesday, either by email or via the newsletter. We’re looking forward to seeing your photographs!

Don’t forget about MapRun, check the following links for courses near to where you live (please adhere to the current travel restrictions).

Parents, please be aware that some of the courses may require crossing busier roads.

For everyone close to Banchory, there is also a MapRun starting and finishing at Scolty Tower!  See here for details

Scottish 6 Days –
Entries Now Open and Key Roles Needed

Hopefully some of you will now have entered the Scottish Six Days. Remember prices go up after the end of the month. Everything you need to know can be found here.

I am the day organiser for day 2, ably assisted by Katja. We are also working with Ayroc and KFO on our day. I am now looking to fill some key roles, namely two start team leaders, a parking team leader, an arena team leader and a string course planner/organiser. I would be very happy to speak to anyone about what is involved – there is loads of information and support available. Please email me at

Thanks, Sue
