MAROC Newsletter 9th June 2020
The Jamie Stevenson Alternative is taking place this week with a photo call, map challenge and online prizegiving. Maroc usually manages to field one of the biggest teams at the JST - let's see if we can manage the same for the Alternative! See here for more details.
President's Piece

I do hope that everyone is coping with the continuing anxiety caused by the current health crisis. As a club we can offer strong support through a joint love of our sport so please let me know if help is needed.

I am happy to report that we have had two very positive developments since the last newsletter.

Our new SI timing equipment has arrived and is being checked over by Mathew, our Equipment Officer. We will have to wait a while until lockdown restrictions are eased sufficiently to test it fully but the process of a slow roll-out is being planned. We are looking for four or five volunteers to help Matthew as a core user of the equipment so please come forward if you are interested.

In addition, we have been granted a community award by the King George V Windfarm panel towards the mapping of the Bellfield Park and the Hill of Banchory. This covers two hub areas, the park and the school that will be ideal for youngsters and adults new to orienteering.

Despite the lockdown there is still plenty of activities available for you, on your own or with one other family. Keep looking online and in social media. We all need to be open to new ideas at the moment.

The Committee met last night and enthusiastically discussed plans for the near future, the winter and well into 2021. Orienteering will b

be back before we know it. Stay safe.

Training Update

As expected at the time of the last newsletter, we are now in transition Phase 1 from Covid-19 with the prospect of entering Phase 2 in the next couple of weeks. Orienteering opportunities for now continue to be centred around the use of MapRun courses, permanent courses, or individual training on a map with no controls out.

There is one new MapRun course now available in Banchory - thanks to Yann Newey for planning. You will find it in the Maroc folder of courses in the MapRunF app and a .pdf file is available to download from the central resource on the SOA website along with all of the others

Alongside this, and subject to access agreements, we would like to set up some "semi-permanent" courses in several areas for club members to have a go at in their own time during July and August. This would involve planning a couple of courses (one yellow / orange and one fully technical) and hanging some tapes at the control sites in the forest. We are now looking for some volunteers to help make this happen, so please contact Bob if you would be willing.

Please also get in touch with Sarah if you would like to help set up some more MapRun courses for the club or just want some more information about how to use the app.

Have fun, but please remember to adhere to current guidelines for travel and exercise!
