Upcoming training and introductory sessions
We started a new block of training and introductory sessions at Cambus on Sunday and were pleased to welcome the Carter and McCartney families to the club.

Fiona, Ollie (11) and Amelie (8) Carter live in Banchory and already know many of our Finzean club members from when they lived there previously. Madina, Colin and Abigel (13) McCartney hail from Cults. Welcome all!

The next session of the introductory block runs in conjunction with our local event on Feb 2nd. Note that this has now been moved to Bellwood, Aboyne, with parking at the World Horse Welfare Centre.

The following week there will be another club training session at Scolty woods. More info and sign-up link to follow!

Details of both will be available as usual from the club website.

Junior colour and participation badges and the J2D2 awards
Did you know that all Maroc junior members can earn badges for participating in events and achieving different colour standards?

Every time you take part in an orienteering event anywhere it can count towards the participation awards with badges to be claimed for 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 events. Our publicity officer, Pat Graham, will do her best to collate the information for all club juniors and posts updates to this several times a year, but if you've taken part in something that Pat doesn't know about then drop her a note with the information and she will add it to the list.

Colour badges are awarded for successful completion of 3 courses at a particular colour standard at a regional event or above. Children should complete these courses on their own to be eligible for the awards. The badges can be achieved at iron, bronze, silver or gold standard, depending on how fast you run! Maroc's next regional event is at Birsemore on Sun 8th March.

More information about participation and colour badges is available here

The Jon Duncan Junior Deeside Cup (J2D2) is a league competition based around 6-8 regional events organised by Gramp and Maroc each year, and is open to all Gramp and Maroc juniors aged 16 or under. Juniors participate in 2-year age categories (8 and under, 10, 12, 14 and 16) and are awarded points according to which course they run and how fast they complete it compared with other juniors. You don't need to do anything to take part in this competition; if you have entered the event with Maroc as your club then you will automatically be included in the league.

Badges, certificates and trophies for the participation, colour and J2D2 schemes are all presented at Maroc's AGM and celebration, usually held at the end of November, so there's still plenty of time to work towards the 2020 awards.
First entry date for British Champs and JK coming up!
The early entry date (cheapest rates) for the British Champs and Jan Kjellstrom events is this weekend, 21st Jan.

The British Champs will be held in the SE of England over the weekend of 21-22 March with the individual competition on the Saturday and relays on the Sunday. A number of Maroc families will be making the long journey south and we will be planning on entering some relay teams, so watch out for a call for names from Sarah if you wish to take part in this as well as the individual. Details here
The Jan Kjellstrom (JK) event is always held over Easter weekend and consistes of 4 days of competition - sprint on the Fri, middle on Sat, long on Sun and relays on Mon. This year the event will be in North Yorkshire, so rather more accessible than sometimes! There will be plenty of Maroc families attending this event, so if you're looking for something to do in the holidays then it's well worth taking a look at this. Information is available here. There will be a call for names for the relay teams for this shortly also.

On behalf of the organising team I would like to invite MAROC to Edinburgh University Orienteering Clubs annual festival of Orienteering - the Big Weekend! This event will run from the 24th-26th of January and packs in 3 high quality races as well as the Saturday night ceilidh.

Entries for the 2020 event are now open at the link below, don't miss out on early-bird prices, entries increase on the 1st of December. Enter here:

We hope to see you at Edinburgh University Orienteering Club's Big Weekend 2020!
