MAROC Newsletter 23rd June 2020
Catriona Chapman's winning Strava Dala horse entry for the Jamie Stevenson Alternative challenge.
President's Piece

The latest Government announcements on the relaxation of restrictions did not change much for orienteering this time round but we are fortunate to have the large choice of MapRun courses up and down Deeside to challenge our navigation and running. We are hoping for more encouraging news in the coming weeks.

After much consideration our Scottish O League and Senior Home International Event on 5th September has had to be cancelled but we are hoping to rearrange the event for next year. The focus now is on preparing a schedule of low-key local events for the remainder of the year once health restrictions allow. Procedures at these events will initially be different but the orienteering will be the same.

An important part of the return will be the use of the new SI timing equipment. The Maroc SI Team (Matthew Gooch, Chris Low, Sarah Dunn, Keith Roberts, Andy Tivendale and Nick Hale) met virtually last week and are making great progress in understanding how we will use the equipment. We would now like to encourage more Event Helpers, Organisers and Planners to join the Team for the next planning and early execution stage. This expanded Team will be the first to learn how to use the new SI kit to run events and then instruct others in the future. Please contact:

Matthew (computing@marocscotland.org.uk) or

Chris (equipment@marocscotland.org.uk).

Congratulations to all our Juniors who took part in the Virtual Jamie Stephenson Trophy activities. Thanks also to those Seniors from the club who were instrumental to the event’s success. We have the Trophy for another year but the pressure is on us even more to retain it next year!

Take care and Stay safe.

Training Update

Training opportunities currenty remain as previously, centred around the use of MapRun courses, permanent courses, or individual training on a map with no controls out.

Please get in touch with Sarah if you would like to help set up some more MapRun courses for the club or just want some more information about how to use the app.

Have fun, but please remember to adhere to current guidelines for travel and exercise!

Jamie Stevenson Alternative Challenge

There was a fantastic response from youngsters across Scotland to the Jamie Stevenson Alternative Challenge, with over 70 entries from 13 different clubs, including 10 Maroc juniors. The challenge was to design and run an orienteering course in your neighbourhood that visited 9 different specified features, and as a bonus for older juniors there was an extra challenge to run this in the shape of a horse (akin to the Jamie Stevenson trophy).
Several Maroc juniors created excellent submissions which were recognised by prizes for Catriona Chapman, Jonas Newey, Ewan Bennett and Ben Redmond. Chris / Ben Redmond's special Strava art MapRun course on Aboyne Green (pictured) was particularly impressive! It was great to some of our younger members - Emily Bichard, Findlay Cormack and Ben - all having a go too.
Overall the organising team was so impressed by all the entries that a video has been compiled to showcase them all. You can view it here.
