President's Piece

The Scottish Government have given us a Route Map out of Lockdown and we are starting to get some clarity on our initial return to events and training. If all goes to plan the ‘Stay at Home’ message will be lifted on 5th April and this should then allow us to hold local Aberdeenshire-only events like our 3rd January event at Glen O’Dee. So, please put Wednesday 14th April in your diary for the first Forest Sprint event at Bellwood and watch for further details as the situation evolves.

The SOA have also been busy with a provisional Scottish fixture list, published from the end of May, including a Scottish Spring Weekend in Perthshire and the Scottish Championships at Craig-a-Barns in June. With the 6 Day Event included, things are starting to look encouraging. Check the SOA website for more details.

There is even talk of the British Middle Distance Championships being held in the Lake District in May or June, so there is something to look forward to whatever your level or aspirations. It is a welcome change to have something to plan towards, all be it with the big caveats of when travel and larger gatherings will be allowed. It’s time to get back into training!

Finally, lets just spare a thought for the teams of volunteers who are working hard through uncertainty to get orienteering back on track and to those who are still finding the effects of the pandemic a hard mental and physical challenge. Hope is starting to be more tangible.

Take care, stay safe.

Map Run
Sarah Dunn has recently set up 3 new MapRun courses at Hill of Banchory.  They are all Novice (yellowish) They have all been added to the existing set of River Dee Novice MapRuns which can be found on the MapRun app.  Information on MapRun can be found here and the MapRun app can be downloaded from your app store for free.  All you need to take part is a smartphone and a map.
Have you seen these trophies?

We have been contacted to track down three of the trophies from the Scottish Relay Champs at Drumlanrig in 2019. It is believed that Maroc have these. Please could you scour your mantelpieces and let me know swoobarrie@gmail.com if you have one of them? Thanks, Sue SRC Handicap (junior)SRC Handicap (senior)

Junior Lockdown Challenge
The 6 weeks of the junior lockdown activity challenge have finished. Congratulations to Joe O’Sullivan who has completed far more activities than anyone else. The most popular activity was unsurprisingly, given the recent weather conditions, building things from snow. The activities will be put up on the Maroc website so that anyone can still give them a go.Joe O'Sullivan doing indoor navigation round a cones course.
Scottish 6 days
Plans are well under way for the Scottish 6 Days in Lochaber. With the road map out of lockdown it is starting to look likely that it will actually happen! It is good to see that a lot of Maroc members have entered already. It would be good to see some of our less experienced members taking part too. A big event can feel really daunting but everyone is always very friendly and helpful. There are courses to suit all abilities and there is no obligation to do all of the days – some of the venues are some distance from Fort William and could be done in isolation as part of a holiday in the area. More information is here www.scottish6days.com   As day organiser for day 2, I have filled most of the team leader roles for the day, but am still looking for someone to take the lead with car parking. I’m pleased to say that no muddy fields are involved! Please get in touch if you think you could help. swoobarrie@gmail.com
