Helping each other

As a club we would like to look out for all our members during the current situation and offer support to anyone who needs it. Although it is the over 70s and those with pre-existing health conditions who are identified as being vulnerable, any of us may be in need of support at different times. Whether you are living on your own and in need of some chat, struggling to juggle life as a single parent family, self-isolating, or even just going stir crazy from being cooped up too long, we can help each other by pulling together as a community.

If we all look out for each other then hopefully it won't be necessary to ask, but if for any reason you would like some practical help (to shop, pick up medication, or whatever it might be that helps you) please let me know.  This will be treated confidentially, except to get you the help which you would like from those who can. If you are a member who can possibly provide some practical help to other members along the above lines, then please also let me know.

Training During Lockdown

As long as we remain in a lockdown situation we should all be avoiding any unecessary travel from our homes and that includes travel for your daily exercise. I think it's fair to say that the vast majority of Maroc members are extremely lucky with where they live and many people have access to woodland and countryside very close to their homes. Please use these areas for your training and don't be tempted to go further afield. For many, it will still be possible to do some specific orienteering training within these restrictions; there are MapRun courses available in or very close to most villages and with a bit of imagination almost any bit of woodland or open land can be turned into some form of terrain running and compass exercise - see below for one idea.

Armchair Orienteering

During this period we can also be doing lots of different armchair orienteering exercises, which can be fun, useful skills practice and also potentially really useful for the club!...

If you haven't already seen any of the puzzles, games or ideas out there then one of the best places to start is the Maroc Facebook page, where Pat regularly shares ideas from all around the world. Scottish Orienteering is currently publishing a daily puzzle or challenge which can be accessed here, as well as daily from the SOA Facebook page. World of O is publishing a daily "Route to the O Season" route choice exercise here. And for something a bit different, take a look at this Italian Virtual O using Google Street View (you can use Google translator to understand the questions linked with each control location).
Aside from the games, you could be helping the club to prepare some further courses both for MapRun and also, potentially, for use in real events later in the year. It seems highly likely that we will enter a phase beyond lockdown where we are able to travel a bit more and exercise more freely, but still won't be able to host any proper events. MapRun will offer a great way for people to do more orienteering during this phase, either just for fun and practice or more competitively. Although it is always best to check out course planning on the ground, MapRun course setting can be done remotely and if we prep some courses now then we can be ready to roll them out as soon as the opportunity arises. We would love to set some beginners courses as well as ones for regular orienteers, to give other members of the public a chance to discover our sport. If you have any ideas about this, would like to help set this up, or simply learn how to set up MapRun courses for yourself, then please get in touch with Sarah (email

And looking further ahead, if you would like to do some armchair planning for a proper event later in the year, (or even forest planning if it is on your doorstep!) then please get in touch with Denise (email The entire club orienteering calendar will be reviewed once the situation becomes clearer, but if there is known interest in planning in particular areas then thse may well take priority.

Maroc Strava Art Competition

And finally, here's an idea to give a new slant to your local run... the launch of the Maroc Strava Art Competition. Over the next two weeks (deadline Mon 13th April) you are challenged to draw your best CAPERCAILLIE when you go out for your daily exercise. The idea is to use your gps watch to record a trace in the shape of a capercaillie. As orienteers, we should be able to put our compass and navigational skills into good practice to have a crack at this and can make it into a quality piece of technical training. Throw some artistic skill into the mix with your course planning and then just cross your fingers that the satellites are behaving too! Once you have completed your run, please upload your data to Strava, adding the #MarocStravaArt #StravaCapercaillie tags for completeness. There is already a "Maroc" group on Strava which you can request to join if you aren't already a member. This will make it easy for us to view each others artwork. Best efforts will  feature in the next newsletter, and who knows we might even award some lavish prizes at the end of the Strava Art competition series!
