MAROC Newsletter 26th May 2020

I hope everyone is continuing to navigate successfully through the unknown territory in which we currently find ourselves. As orienteers, at least we now have a (route) map, outlined by the First Minister on 21st May to help us!

With this Routemap the SOA is now working on the correct guidance for orienteering in Scotland. This will be communicated soon with an outline of the reactivation plan for the coming weeks and months. At all times the top priority must be compliance with the latest public health information.

Of course, the current lockdown restrictions in Scotland remain in place until this Thursday (28th May) when there will be a further announcement from the Scottish Government. On that day, if we enter Phase 1 of the Roadmap, we will be able to expand our personal activities but we will not at this stage be given the green light to ‘return to sport’.

Later in this Newsletter there are some suggestions on what personal Phase 1 activities you could be doing in your local area and in the meantime, we all await the full guidance from the SOA.

On a separate note; next week (1st to 7th June) is National Volunteers Week. Please check in with the SOA website to help celebrate the wonderful contributions that we all make to our sport.

And I can’t go without congratulating the MAROC Lockdown Orienteering team that battled so hard last weekend over mind-boggling O puzzles. Just participating was a major achievement! Well done! Nick Hale

Training Update

Hopefully, from this Thursday we will enter Phase 1 of the Scottish Government Routemap to recovery. This will not open up any major new opportunities for participating in orienteering, other than permitting a short drive to an area where you wish to exercise. This means that orienteering will continue to be centred around the use of MapRun courses, permanent courses, or individual training on a map with no controls out. It may be possible to extend this to include some club "ROMP" (Regional Orienteering Map) style courses which could be accessed at any time. The most exciting new development from Thu is that we should be able to meet a friend or other family to go training with, providing physical distancing is maintained. Stay tuned at 12:30 Thu 28th and check the SOA website subsequently for an update.

Please do get in touch with Sarah if you would like to help set up some MapRun courses for the club; it would be great to see if we can get some technical courses set up in one or two of our more open canopy forests. Information on the SOA website has recently been updated to reflect the new version of MapRunF.

Have fun, but please remember to adhere to current guidelines for travel and exercise.

Lockdown Orienteering

A team of seven MAROC members took part in last weekend’s Lockdown Orienteering Competition. They were up against some very serious teams from all over the world and came a creditable 32nd place. There were 7 varied and fun stages to the event to be completed online over 4 days. In all cases the time pressure was very real, and even without the usual physical exertion there were some sweaty palms! The first 2 stages involved making the right route choice in an urban setting with maximum points awarded for the right decision made in the minimum time. Completing a jigsaw of an orienteering map sounds relaxing but with the clock ticking there were moments of panic. In stage 4, a map segment with a control was shown, followed by photos of 4 controls from which to choose the mapped one – without going back to the map. The event culminated with Streetview O. Set in Dreux in France (looks charming on Streetview!), this was the nearest to the real thing, with more than one team member losing their place and having to relocate. Well done to Josh, Yann, Ranolph, Nick, Sarah, Adam and Sue.

Junior WhatsApp Group
We are setting up a junior WhatsApp group to provide a forum for Maroc juniors to share orienteering chat, initially around the Jamie Stevenson alternative event, but subsequently about opportunities for training, getting together etc. Kirsty and Eilidh Campbell have agreed to take a lead in getting this going, so please contact Kirsty with your phone number if you would like to be added to the group. SOA Volunteer Awards

There's still time to nominate people for the following SOA volunteer awards:

  • Young Orienteer of the Year - This award is presented to a member 21 years and under who has shown considerable contribution to the sport and their club.
  • Presidents Medal - The President’s Medal is awarded annually to a volunteer who has contributed or achieved something exceptional in the last year or over recent years. This may be a club- or sport-related contribution, or athletic achievement.
SOA will also be celebrating National Volunteer Week from 1-7 June 2020 and would like to feature nominated members each day during the week. This is a chance to celebrate our members who ensure events and coaching happen regularly, who support our clubs’ growth and who offer their valued expertise at the board and within their club committees.

Anyone can make nominations for the various awards and volunteer week features here. Deadline is the 29th May.
Don't forget to read the latest issue of SCORE, SOA's quarterly magazine.

Paper copies can be requested via the SOA office (details in every issue).

As always, contributions from all readers are welcome.  If you'd like to discuss, email
