President's Report

Following the latest government announcements, we have had to suspend all our club orienteering activities from this morning. I hope everyone can see how important this is as part of the Nation’s collective effort to overcome the virus.

The committee will meet in the next two weeks to consider the impact on our event and training programme from February onwards but please, in the interim, continue to make use of the many MapRun smartphone courses on Deeside and follow your individual training regimes.

We shall resume activities as soon as possible in the confidence that we have put on three local events, five club training sessions and five DNC night events since the resumption from the last lockdown in September. That was after a break of six months, but this time I am confident that we and the national orienteering calendar shall emerge far quicker.

Our two events at Potarch (night) and Glen O’Dee over the festive period were very well attended and a great success due to the number of folk eager to brave the snow and ice and the top-quality organisation and planning. Thanks to everyone.

We have a great deal to look forward to this year so keep fit and keep positive!

Take care, stay safe.

MAROC training opportunities for 2021

MAROC has always had a reputation for providing regular and good training, and we ran a number of successful training sessions of different formats despite the restrictions in place in 2020. In a previous newsletter, Sue had asked for anyone interested in joining a group with the aim of thinking about future MAROC training. Genevieve, Sue and I got together virtually and set some initial and manageable aims for 2021, these being a coaching ‘stock take’ (finding out how many coaches we have available) and to run at least one training session each month. Our initial plan was to organise sessions for January to March, and only a couple days ago I sent a request to all coaches to volunteer to run these sessions. The planned dates were 24 January, 21 February and 21 March, with areas and type of training still to be confirmed.

With the announcement of another lockdown, we are now not able to run the January date, however, we’ll keep the February and March dates in our calendars, with the hope that we can run something then. I’m still looking for coaches to lead on these sessions.

So, watch this space in the newsletters, we’ll keep you updated on any training opportunities.

And, if you are interested in joining the planning group, please get in touch.

Calling All Coaches and Would-be Coaches

British Orienteering and SOA have put together a virtual coaching conference during January and several of the sessions would be really useful for our Maroc coaches or others looking to help out at future sessions. I have signed up for one on safety in remote terrain this Saturday.

Details can be found here

For up to date details check out the Coaching Conference webpage here.

Scottish 6 Days – Entries Now Open and Key Roles Needed

We all need something to look forward to and the Scottish 6 Days orienteering in Lochaber from 1st to 7th August is just that. There are several new and exciting new areas to dovetail into a week long holiday over in the west. Entries are now open with the cheapest rates available until the end of January. Fingers and toes are all crossed that Covid restrictions are eased enough by then to enable this to go ahead, but almost full refunds are being offered in the event of cancellation. Everything you need to know can be found here.

Nick and Dan have been busy planning courses for Day 2 at Inverlochy – otherwise known as Fort William Golf Course and a bit up the hill behind it. I am the day organiser for day 2, ably assisted by Katja. I am now looking to fill some key roles, namely two start team leaders, a parking team leader, an arena team leader and a string course planner/organiser. I would be very happy to speak to anyone about what is involved – there is loads of information and support available. Please email me at  swoobarrie@gmail.com

Thanks, Sue
