President's Report

With the New Year almost upon us, now is the time to look forward, not back. It’s difficult at the moment, particularly with the imminent change to Level 4 restrictions, but 2021 will eventually deliver a full orienteering programme and plans are well underway.

Despite the increase in restrictions on Boxing Day I’m very pleased to say that our two events over the Festive period are still going ahead, for residents of Aberdeenshire only. These are the Deeside Night Cup event at Potarch on 30th December and the Local event at Glen O’Dee on 3rd January. Covid protocols are now well established through the six events held since resumption and we ask everyone to continue their strict compliance.

It is very important to keep your distance from volunteers, other competitors and the public and to avoid transmission by touch.

The health benefits of outdoor exercise are being recognised now more than ever. Orienteering is able to continue in Covid Level 4 as it is recognised by SportScotland as an outdoor non-contact sport where competitors participate in individual bubbles. The benefits are as much mental as physical. More information can be found on the SOA website.

As we look into the New Year, coaching and training will be of increased importance, developing our skills for the resumption. Sue, Katja and Genevieve are refreshing our coaching programme and deserve our support as we move the club forward in 2021.

Thanks to everyone for volunteering during a challenging 2020. We have achieved a great deal as a club and I’d like to wish everyone in Maroc a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Take care, stay safe.

2020/21 Deeside Night Cup (DNC) Competition

As the Covid Level has risen above Level 2, Aberdeen City residents are no longer able to travel for orienteering in Aberdeenshire and vice versa. As a result, the competitive element of the DNC has been suspended until interarea travel restarts. Some events, like ours at Potarch, will continue but only for those eligible to travel.

It is suggested that the final points tally will be counted based on everyone’s best ‘half +1 (rounded down)’ of the number of fully competitive events. If we manage 10 or 11 events, for example, the best 6 will be counted. Also, organisers will still get their 50 points whether their event went ahead or not!

The night series has been going on for so long without interruption that it would be a real shame to have a break in the trophy holders, especially as we have been able to hold 8 events already under such difficult circumstances. Watch the Maroc and GRAMP websites and the DNC blog for updates.

Glen O Dee Local Event

Start the New Year with a bang at our first event of 2021 – Glen O’Dee on Sunday 3 January.

Please note that this event is only open to those living in Aberdeenshire due to current government rules regarding covid-19.  Pre-entry will be required – there will be strictly no entry available on the day and entries open today, Tuesday 22nd  December, closing on Sunday 27th at 10pm.

Car parking is at the Burnett Park, Banchory, AB31 5HU.

Courses available are White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green and planner Jon Musgrave’s special Turquoise Course (a combination of Long Green & Short Blue).

Start Times will be in 10-minute start blocks which will be advised via email on 31 December.  This event will be contactless for those with SI-Air timing chips.

Some of the courses finish along a short piece of quiet public road and we are looking for plenty of volunteers to help Marshall as well as the usual jobs of Car Parking, Start Marshalls and Download.  I will be sending out an email looking for volunteers shortly!

Charges for each course will be £5 for adults and £2.50 for Juniors/Students/adults on Yellow course – this will be invoiced by email after the event.

Full details on the Maroc web site.

Christmas Caper Score training at Glen O’Dee

The full permitted complement of 30 people attended the Score event organised by Sue Barrie on Sunday. It was particularly good to see new members Ewan and Joy Cameron there. Twenty controls were marked by a picture of a random object (varying from Coronavirus to cuddly toy), and participants visited as many of these as they could in 45 minutes. The catch was that they had to remember the pictures and download their brain of these to their coach back at base. It turned out that everyone had a very good memory! Bonus points were awarded for sharing a Christmas joke with the coach and for wearing festive attire. Congratulations to Jonas Newey and Emily Bichard for their great performances!

We now have a set of new general signs which are in the club store and available for use at your next event. Please let the equipment officer know if any other signage is required.
