Joe O'Sullivan completing  week 3 Junior Challenge

President's Piece

This past fortnight has been dominated by snow and I’m not sure much orienteering would have been done even without Covid. The snow conditions have been excellent for skiing and many of you have no doubt been out making the most of it. We are not nimble enough to offer ski orienteering but it is a significant sport elsewhere and, some would say, the best opportunity to get orienteering into the Olympics.

We have finally had to acknowledge that the Night Series this winter has come to a premature end and the final results have been published on the DNC blog (dncchat.wordpress.com). The proposed event at Braes of Logie Coldstone last Wednesday would have been very interesting in the snow but we shall just have to leave these joys for next year. Congratulations to all our podium finishers, particularly Catriona Chapman (W16) and Ruth Gooch (W14), first ladies respectively in the Night Cup and Mini Night Cup and many thanks to everyone who competed in or organised the events.

There are still a couple of weeks remaining for the Junior Challenge Activities. It’s a good opportunity to keep those skills ticking over. In the meantime, we wait for the next announcement of restrictions easing in the knowledge that all the Covid numbers are heading in the right direction. We just need to be patient.

Take care, stay safe.

Deeside Night Cup

Final Results are now available for the curtailed night series. Only the first eight events are used, where all Gramp, Maroc and AUOC runners were able to compete. The best five results count to the final total and all organisers get maximum points whether your event took place or not. It’s been a bit different this year, but then what hasn’t! Turn-outs were above normal so thanks to everyone who came along and adapted to the Covid precautions. Thanks also to Drew Tivendale and Ian Hamilton for the results and invoicing.

Full results are on the DNC blog; dncchat.wordpress.com. Here’s a summary – big round of applause for all:

Deeside Night Cup

Open

1st Joe Wright (M20) Maroc

2nd Matthew Gooch (M18) Maroc

3rd Adam Barrie (M16) Maroc

No gala event with lavish prizes this year but there is always 2022! No formal award for the ‘Toughest of the Tough’ but Drew’s courses at Birsemore Hill in early December will take some beating!

Maroc Junior  6 week Challenge

Some of our juniors have been busy with the junior challenges this week. The week 4 challenge was to build in snow, and Joe O’Sullivan has done a great job with his igloo:

Ranolph and Beau dug a snowhole:

Jonas and Yann created a new (if temporary) club mascot called Dave!

It would be good to hear from anyone else who has had a go at any of the activities.

The week 5 activities will be sent out by separate email today. It’s not too late to complete any of the challenges set so far to get your name in the next newsletter.

If you’d like to see your score on the leader board on the MAROC newsletter, email or whatsapp Sue Barrie at swoobarrie@gmail.com or 07763 212261 and/or send a photograph after you have done each challenge. There will be a certificate at the end for everyone that has taken part!

We might be in lockdown, but we can keep exercising body and brain.

Scottish 6 Days –
Entries Now Open and Key Roles Needed

It’s good to see some Maroc members have entered the six days.  Everything you need to know can be found here.

I am the day organiser for day 2, ably assisted by Katja. We are also working with Ayroc and KFO on our day. KFO have put up a start team leader and Ayroc are looking after the string course. Our own Keith Roberts will be the other start team leader. I am now looking for a parking team leader, and an arena team leader.  I would be very happy to speak to anyone about what is involved – there is loads of information and support available. Please email me at  swoobarrie@gmail.com

Thanks, Sue
