President's Piece

We are holding two events in the next fortnight, a Sunday Local Event at Creag Choinnich in Braemar and a Wednesday Night O event at Haughton Country Park in Alford. There is something for everyone and I hope that you will come out and support the club for at least one of them.

Creag Choinnich is a classic Upper Deeside forest with an area of moraines below steeper slopes. It was used as a Scottish 6 Days area during Royal Deeside 2017 and before that for the Scottish Relays in 2012. It is an acknowledged high-quality area. The lower forest behind the Invercauld Arms Hotel is also very picturesque and ideal for beginners and Juniors learning the sport.

Haughton Country Park in Alford is a runnable woodland area that has recently been mapped at 1:5000 scale by Jon Musgrave (Deeside Orienteering and Leisure Maps) and this will be the first event on the map. It is an ideal area for an introduction to night orienteering as well as offering unique challenges to the experienced.

Both these events require pre-entry so act promptly and sign-up using the links on the event pages of the Maroc website. We are devising ways to make the organisation both simple and Covid safe so there will be a few changes to the style of the events. The orienteering will, of course, be the same!

Covid is still with us and will be for a time yet. The transition to SI timing is an extra layer of complication so I’d like to thank everyone for the efforts they are putting in during this difficult period to keep the Club running.

Deeside Night Cup
 A Maroc/GRAMP joint series of Night Orienteering Events
Notes for Competitors
Information on each club’s events can be found on the Maroc and GRAMP websites. Cumulative results, more information and a discussion forum on the Series can be found on the DNC Blog: here

Each event has 2 courses with the following approximate guidelines:
Deeside Night Cup (Long) – 5km approx, winning time 40 minutes Mini Night Cup (Short) – 3km approx, winning time 35 minutes Course distances will vary depending on the terrain and amount of climb. Both will be technically challenging (TD5, Green+) with no concessions to darkness.
They are for experienced club orienteers. If you’re not yet TD5 (Green) standard then please find someone to run with the first couple of times so you can pick up tips on Night O navigation strategy.

Starts: 1800 – 1900hrs (earlier or later at planner’s discretion) Courses Close at 2000hrs. Competitors must strictly observe the course closure time and run early if you think you may be out for more than an hour.
The events will use SI Timing and use contact punching, not contact-free. Hire SI-Cards will be available at the event.
Reflectors will be used at the controls instead of kites.
Currently 17 events are scheduled for the Series.
Points are awarded for each course at each event, 50, 47, 44, 42, 40 for the first five finishers then decreasing by one for the remainder. The best 9 results count to the final tally at the end of the Series. If any events are excluded for any reason it will be (the number of events +1)/2 rounded up to count. The organiser for each event automatically gets 50 points.

Dress for the weather just as at any other orienteering event A powerful head torch is required. These are readily available from outdoors suppliers. The more powerful the headtorch the easier it is going to be! A back-up torch is mandatory. A whistle, extra clothing and mobile phone are advised.

£5.00 senior, £2.50 junior and full-time student.

Running the event under Covid conditions
Before the event: All Competitors must pre-enter using a Google-Form through a link on the organising club’s website. No entry on the night. Closing date will be 10pm the Monday before the event.
Start time slots will be pre allocated and sent by email the Tuesday before the event.
No pre-payment or handling of cash on the night, payment will be by invoice in February/March 2021 at the end of the series.
At the event: Competitors must get changed ready to run and arrive at the Map pick-up point during their 10-minute time slot, maintaining 2m distancing between households.
Competitors collect their maps and go directly to the Start. Those with Hire SI-Cards can collect them with their map.
All Competitors must ensure that the organiser knows they are running.
Hand sanitiser must be used before picking up maps and SI cards.
Gloves must be removed.
There will be no ‘key-drop’.
At the start everyone must ‘punch’ the ‘Clear’ and ‘Start’ SI units. During your run keep 2m apart even if it means losing a couple of seconds at a control.
At the finish follow instructions to Download and ensure that the organiser knows that you have finished your course.
No splits will be handed out.
Go directly to your car and please do not linger.

Every effort will be made to get results on the organising club’s website the day after the event but in some instances, it may take a little longer.

Competitors MUST carry a spare torch and are advised to take a whistle, adequate clothing and a mobile phone.
A Covid Risk Assessment will be completed for the event and will be signed off by the club Covid Officer and a Committee Member.
A standard risk assessment will also be completed for the event and countersigned by a club member with night planning/organising experience. The organiser will have a first aid kit and a rucksack with sleeping bag, extra torches and warm clothing available in their car.
The organiser’s mobile number will be printed on the competition map
. If the weather is bad, the organiser can insist that competitors carry a cagoule.
Remember that orienteering – even in daylight – has inherent risks. At night these risks are increased. By entering these events you are accepting responsibility for your own safety.
British Orienteering Talent Squad Selections

Congratulations to Adam Barrie who has been selected into the British Orienteering Talent Squad for 2020/2021!
Adam will join Ewan Musgrave in the Tier 1 of younger athletes, whilst Eilidh Campbell and Matthew Gooch have both been reselected to Tier 2 of the squad.
Good luck to all of them with their training over the winter, and here's hoping that there may be some interntional races for them to target next year!


Our Annual General Meeting will be held by Zoom at 7pm on Monday 23rd November. Sadly this year no tug-O-war and no pot luck supper! Also regrettably, with so little orienteering going on in 2020, there will be no John Duncan Cup trophies or standard awards for our youngsters.

However, we do need to have an AGM, the agenda for which is:

  1. Welcome and Introduction from the President
  2. Apologies
  3. Approval of the 2019 AGM minutes
  4. President’s report
  5. Treasurer’s report and approval of accounts
  6. Approval of proposed fees for 2021 and 2022
  7. Election of the 2021 Club Committee

Please do attend if you can – a chance to see those happy smiling faces of your fellow club members!


There are various positions on the committee coming vacant, any of which provide an excellent opportunity to get to know your club better and to support the wonderful sport of orienteering. These are Vice President, Mapping Officer, Development Officer, Lead Coach and Club Captain.
