Defying the odds
Myesha Lyles was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a rare noncancerous tumor, in her brain. After a 14-hour surgery, the tumor was gone, but so was her vision and hearing in her right ear. Today, she is Worlds Ahead.
Student aids in city beautification

David Riera served as a mentor for the Miami Bridge project. His background in environmental work + his passion for community service drove him to gather volunteers from South Florida to aid in beautifying our environment.  

DNA test stops illegal shipment

First developed to help customs officials identify protected shark species for fins passing through borders, the DNA testing method now helps identify illegally trafficked eels. The method has led to the arrest of smugglers in Hong Kong.

Discovery could be game-changer

Manufacturing drugs may one day become more efficient. FIU chemists have developed an iron-based material that like platinum may be able to remove potentially dangerous molecules from medicines before they hit the market.
