Reminder from the Fire Chief: Safe Disposal of Fireplace Waste, Grill Waste, or Ashes
The risk of fire does not disappear when flames die down. Even several days after your fire, wood ashes can retain enough heat to ignite a house fire or other combustible material in your refuse container if not disposed of properly.
Please follow these guidelines for safe disposal:
- Do not dispose of hot ashes in plastic, paper, or cardboard. Carefully empty hot ashes into a metal container that can be tightly closed with a metal lid.
- Douse the ashes with water and secure the lid.
- Store the covered container in a safe location outside and away from your house, wind, and other ignitable or combustible materials.
- Leave ashes in the metal container for at least several days, allowing them to cool completely.
- Once the ashes have cooled completely, they can be transferred to a plastic bag, securely tied, and disposed of in your curbside refuse container.

Hibbard Road Closed between Willow and Elm until January 8

Christmas Tree Pickup through January 17
Christmas trees will be picked up from the curbside for shredding, chipping, and composting: the last day of Christmas tree collection is January 17, when trees must be placed on the curb by 7 AM. After that date, a refuse yard waste sticker will be required to ensure collection. Please remove everything from trees, including plastic bags, wraps, ornaments, tinsel, wires, and the stand, as these will clog and damage the shredder. If you have questions, please call 847-716-3568.
Holiday lights can be recycled year-round at the Public Works Yards facility at 1390 Willow Road, Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM - 4 PM.
