Winnetka Snow Control Operations

The Winnetka Public Works Department is committed to keeping Village streets clear of snow and ice to maintain safe vehicular and pedestrian traffic on publicly maintained streets and sidewalks throughout the winter months. To ensure streets and sidewalks are free from snow and ice and to maximize department resources, routes have been established and priorities are given to main streets such as Hibbard Road, Tower Road, Willow Road, Green Bay Road, Elm Street, etc. These streets receive much of the traffic within the Village and must be kept clear as primary emergency access routes. The subsequent priority areas are:
  1. streets and sidewalks around schools and churches
  2. residential streets and alleys
  3. public parking lots and decks.
The Village’s snow-parking ordinance Title 10 Section 10.24.040 prohibits parking on Village streets whenever a minimum of 3 inches of snow has accumulated within a 24-hour period. Vehicles parked on the streets in violation of the Village ordinance are subject to a fine and may be towed. Please do your part to ensure vehicles are not parked on Village streets during snow emergencies. This will greatly help the Public Works Department to plow streets.

COVID-19 Tier 3 Resurgence Mitigations
The State of Illinois has moved to Tier 3 resurgence mitigations to control the spread of the virus. It is of the utmost importance that we each do our part to prevent COVID-19 from spreading in our community by taking the following precautions:
  • wear a mask
  • wash your hands
  • practice social distancing
  • avoid gathering in groups
  • stay home if you have symptoms.
View Tier 3 COVID-19 mitigation information on the State of Illinois' website. The Village of Winnetka relies on the Cook County Department of Public Health and the State of Illinois for case statistics.
plastic bagsPlastic Bag Recycling: At the Grocery Store, NOT your Recycling Bin
This is a reminder that plastic bags, film, and wrap are not included in the Village's curbside recycling program offered by Lakeshore Recycling Systems. Plastic film – also known as plastic film packaging – is soft, flexible polyethylene (PE) packaging such as grocery, food, zip-top, and dry cleaning bags. It is also the clear plastic that comes wrapped around many paper products. Bags and film wrap are considered “contamination” at facilities where recyclables are processed, because they get tangled in the equipment. Clean and dry plastic bags, film, and wrap can be recycled at many grocery and retail stores. Be sure to completely empty the bags, film, and wrap of all food and liquid waste before taking them to your nearest participating store. A list of plastics that may be recycled at most stores is below:
  • Grocery bags
  • Bread bags
  • Case overwrap (e.g. water, soda and juice bottles)
  • Dry cleaning bags
  • Newspaper sleeves
  • Ice bags
  • Wood pellet bags
  • Ziplock/reclosable bags
  • Produce bags
  • Bubble wrap
  • Salt bags
  • Cereal bags
