Halloween Trick-or-Treat Guidelines

Recommended trick-or-treating hours for the Village of Winnetka are 2 PM – 6 PM on Saturday, October 31.
  • If you feel unwell, or members of your household are sick, please do not participate.
  • If your household will allow trick-or-treaters, decorate and/or light your house accordingly. You can also download and print signs indicating whether or not your household will participate in trick-or-treating and post them in a location that is visible to trick-or-treaters. (Signs courtesy of Elk Grove Village.)
  • Respect households that choose not to participate and do not approach their homes.
  • Plan in advance for how your household will observe Halloween safely while minimizing COVID-19 risks. Hold a family discussion about your plan so all members of your household are aware of the plan.
  • Wear masks and practice social distancing if you choose to participate in Halloween-related activities. A costume mask does not count as an appropriate mask.
  • Trick-or-treat with members of your household, as opposed to in groups with others. Maintain an appropriate distance from other trick-or-treating groups.
  • Avoid physical contact and communal bowls of candy when possible: a safer alternative is a station where packaged treats can be picked up without contact. The CDC has several lower-risk celebration ideas, as does the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be carried and used frequently.
  • Candy collected during trick-or-treating should not be consumed until after hand washing. As always, a parent/guardian should check all candy to make sure it is wrapped and should discard unwrapped candy.
  • Outdoor areas are preferred for trick-or-treating. Enclosed indoor areas, like apartment buildings, present greater risk of transmission. Open doors and windows as appropriate to promote increased ventilation.
General Safety
If trick-or-treating in the dark, be sure to remain visible to passing vehicles and obey traffic safety rules:
  • Put electronic devices down
  • Don’t run across streets.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets.
  • Drivers, be extra alert for children in low light conditions who may be wearing dark costumes.
  • Parents, walk with children.
police patchA Reminder from the Chief of Police: Please Lock Your Car and Remove Valuables
Our area continues to experience a number of auto theft/burglary related crimes. These incidents are preventable, as vehicles are frequently left unlocked with valuables and keys/fobs left inside. Auto theft causes a number of inconveniences, including cancelling credit cards, replacing your driver’s license, notifying your insurance company, and disputing tolls, among other possibilities. If your vehicle is stolen, there is a strong chance it will be damaged if and when it is recovered.

Please remove your valuables and lock your vehicle. Illuminate the outside of your home at night and do not hesitate to call 911 if you see or hear something suspicious. Let us help you protect your property.

Census Response Deadline Extended
If you haven't responded to the Census, there's still time to be counted: the current deadline to respond is October 5. Every response counts, and Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and informs how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds are allocated at the state, local, and federal level. You can respond to the Census by returning the mailing you received, by completing it online, or by calling 844-330-2020.

New Trier residents can appeal their 2020 assessments to the Cook County Board of Review until at least October 30
New Trier residents can now appeal their 2020 assessments to the Cook County Board of Review. While the Board of Review deadline has not been established, the Board of Review will accept New Trier appeals through at least Friday, October 30.

As a reminder, the 2020 assessment is used to calculate the tax bill residents will receive in July 2021 and does not affect the property tax bill received in July 2020. This year, they will provide both informational overviews on the Board of Review appeal process via Zoom or a drive-thru event.

Drive-thru event
The drive-thru event will allow residents to fill out an appeal without needing to leave their cars. Upon entering the Centennial Parking lot, residents will receive an appeal form from a Board of Review employee that the resident can fill out and return immediately. Residents who have questions can also ask the Board of Review employees at this time. Residents are encouraged to bring their own pen and flat surface (such as a clipboard or magazine) to write on, although pens and clipboards will be provided. Residents must wear masks when interacting with Board of Review staff.
