Sunday Message: Keepin' It Real
with Rev. Amani Malaika
Special Music with Robert Muller

I don't think lovingkindness is about being nice. I believe it is about being fearless.... To have the courage to mirror reality, you have to be willing to feel everything even as you cling to nothing.
--Rabbi Rami Shapiro, The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness

Join in our study of compassion and lovingkindness, based on Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s book: The Sacred Art of Lovingkindness: Preparing to Practice. If you wish to get a copy, you can:
Order from Bookstop (benefits local bookstores)
Order from Amazon Smile (a small portion benefits ABQ CSL)

Often we think of compassion or lovingkindness as "being nice." But what it truly calls for is the courage to be rigorously honest with yourself and others, without judgment or prejudice. It is to be nakedly present in the moment and seeing all that is in front of us through the gaze of Love. To allow the natural unfolding (a.k.a., the consequences) of reality with open hearts and to then respond with lovingkindness and acts of compassion.

Join me online this Sunday in our virtual sanctuary to keep it real, compassionate, loving, and kind!

  2. Where in your life can you be more compassionately honest?

Thank You, Doctors Without Borders!

The international medical relief organization brought a nine-person team to rural New Mexico Native communities last week to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Native communities have been hard-hit by the virus, comprising 56% of cases while only being 11% of NM's total population. Doctors Without Borders chose the Navajo Nation and the San Felipe and Zia Pueblos to focus their efforts on, with the goal of assisting with infection prevention and control. They have in recent weeks been in NYC helping with their outbreak, but prior to that had not been in the U.S. since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. We are very grateful for the assistance of this amazing organization. Please include them and our Native neighbors in your prayers this week.

Do you pray? If you do pray, why?  Is your prayer beseeching, pleading to an intercessor God to alleviate your pain, right some wrong, or bestow upon you some gift from on high, hoping it will forever change your lot in life? What is the tone of your prayer? Is it desperation, rage, or frustration? Is it anguish and despair, resigned to your unbearable suffering and full with an urgent and plaintive expectation that you, among the multitude of beseechers, might have your prayer heard above all others, perhaps with luck and righteous commitment, breaking through the aloof visage of father God’s wizened facade? Do you pray to the bearded white guy in the sky?

Well, stop right now.

This may be the only time you will ever find specific instructions in one of these blogs, but here it is: Get up off of your knees, dust yourself off, stand up straight within your consciousness, (you need not actually stand up straight if it is prohibitive), look God directly in the “I” and give thanks....
