Tumuaki / Principal News

Our heads are full of landscaping, rebuild, moving back home to Lyttelton street, managing buses, maintenance on two sites, class allocations, team compositions, inducting new staff and getting reports finalised to go home in a few weeks.

Next week I start reading all of the reports. I am picky about grammar, syntax and spelling so everyone heads for cover. We want every report to be bespoke. You should be able to read the report and know that the teacher knows your child.

Teams for next year are:

Harakeke (Year 5/6)
Lou Nuualiitia (Team Leader); Glen Campbell, Matt Brorens, Taylor Wilson,

Raupo (Year 3/4)
Georgia Banks (Team Leader); Megan Stewart, Charlotte McCone

Te Pihinga (Year 0-2)
Hannah Gardiner (Team Leader); Natasha Woudberg, Janice Krammer, Isaac McKenzie

We farewell Jessica Gledhill as her fixed term contract has come to an end. We wish her every success in her next ventures.

You will have noticed that Ellie Barnes’ name is not listed. Ellie will be learning the art of being a mum as of March 2021. She is going to be doing CRT and other release time for the first two months before she goes on leave. We wish her sleep and much love as she welcomes her first baby.

It was fantastic to welcome Matt back home to Te Ara Koropiko after his big OE that was rudely interrupted by Covid-19. Our ex DP who shall not be named has been shamelessly hustling to get the best of our TAKWSS team to work with her. There’s no doubt that our best staff are valued by others. All's fair in love and school.

We welcome Isaac McKenzie , who is a husband and dad, so he knows what it’s like to deal with the hurts and worries of a small child. He is keen to be involved in music and anything else that comes his way. We’ll wait for the shock of being a full time teacher to settle in and then we’ll talk turkey.

It gets confusing because when we go home, the learning spaces will have those names as part of the Ngai Tahu renaming  gift. We’ll have to think again about the names of the teams.

Some of our kura whanau are finding life very hard at the moment. Our love and condolences to Corinn, Danielle, Amber, Zoe and Heidi as they mourn the sudden passing of their husband and dad, David Holland. They have been a part of our school whanau for a long time. Please respect the family’s privacy as they come to terms with the loss of David.

We have other school whanau who are facing illness and loss. If you know of a need for those families  please let us know how we can help.

Please remember the Volunteers Thank You morning tea at 11.am. Dec 1. If you have been a helper or volunteer in our school this year,  please accept this as your personal invitation and let the office know that you are coming along.

We are now the proud owners of 20 scooters and 28 helmets thanks to Tu Manawa funding generosity. We got a great deal from Push Bikes in Rangiora. Our school is very generously supported by organisations so that our children get the best.

The scooters need to be processed and we have to work out a manageable system for school use. We also need to ensure that our children understand how to look after property so that it lasts and can be enjoyed by everyone.

We are looking at deadlines for going home and trying to back plan dates so we are set to go. There is so much to do in  terms of booking the movers, packing up, disconnecting services here, shifting off over two days(yes we will take all the parent helpers we can get please as there is a really tight timetable to get home) and settling back home. As soon as we have the dates decided we will let you know. I had visions of us running down Lyttelton Street, with couches balanced on our heads last time and I’m really relieved it didn't happen.

The weather has been a factor in athletics and our Kahukura Cultural Festival again. Let's hope we can do both next week.

The Scooters and helmets are signed, sealed and delivered and we are looking for a roll out plan so when we go home we have all of the ducks in a row.  Thank you again to Sport Canterbury and Tu Manawa.

We have had an incredibly generous donation from The Bikes In Schools Trust to help us convert the containers into bike storage and build some of the track. We were blown away by their generosity.

Enjoy the warmer weather and stay well

Kind regards

Marriene

Zone's Athletics

Thursday, 5 November, the Te Ara Koropiko West Spreydon Athletics Team competed at the South West Zones at Nga Puna Wai Park.
36 students did themselves proud as they ran, threw and jumped in front of an enthusiastic crowd on a typical Canterbury day with sun, wind and rain.
Congratulations to all the athletes and especially those who placed.
A big thank you to the parents who helped chaperone the children to and from the grounds.

News from Room 2

In Room 2 we have been looking at the Māori world view through myths and legends. This has helped us understand how to look after the land and the local ecosystem. We now understand the importance of being kaitiaki of the land. We represented Tangaroa (God of the Sea, Lakes and Rivers), Tana Mahuta (God of the Forests), Ruaumoko (God of Volcanoes and Earthquakes) and Tawhirimatea (God of Thunder, Lightning, Wind and Storms) through visual art. We first sketched our gods in pencil. We then used black, white and two other colours to make bold lines in pastel. Our last step was to dye the background in a colour that suited our god.

Senior Cricket

The TAKWSS cricket team faced off against Ilam last Friday on the Ilam home turf. Being the visiting team made no difference to our players, who won the game 94 to 36. Jacob Robertson shone with bat and ball, top scoring with 10 runs along with Charlie Quinn. Jacob removed 2 players when bowling, with Finn Langrell also knocking down the wickets of 2 opposition players. The next game is against Cotswold School on the 27th November.
