The Ring of Keys Consultancy is a resource for producers, casting directors, and theatremakers who are in need of a Gender Consultant or Queer Consultant for their theatrical projects.

As part of our mission to promote the hiring of queer women, trans, and gender non-conforming artists, our consultancy services provide our theatre community with the necessary resources for projects with queer & trans themes, while also advocating for our Members.

What does a Gender Consultant do?

  • Provides language support for casting notices, press releases, etc.

  • Facilitates a safe and supportive environment for queer artists in your production so they can do their best work

  • Supports playwright/director/dramaturg

  • Communicates guidance and provides education for your institution at large, including marketing, company management, front of house, etc.

  • Gives your production the greatest impact of telling a truthful story

Meet our Consultancy Director, Josephine Kearns!

We're three months into our new Monthly Workshop Series, and the verdict is... IT’S A HIT!
On Klea Blackhurst's Old School Masterclass:

“Working with Klea was so fun! Her depth of knowledge of the art form coupled with passionate teaching techniques made exploring the specific styles of the Golden Age of musical theatre full of enjoyable discoveries. I also think the Ring of Keys workshop series is a really unique not-to-be missed learning opportunity that allows us to explore topics like Golden Age musical theatre in a brave space through a queer lens. It felt really refreshing to be able to frankly discuss the oft-problematic, heteronormative themes that exist in the genre and find ways to reckon with and subvert them as queer artists!”

—Madge Dietrich, Key Member

On Every Body Dance with Eliana Kayelle:

“Ring of Keys' Monthly Workshop Series is a beautiful reflection of a marginalized community building its own resources. Eliana Kayelle was incredibly generous in their offerings, both as instructor and as fellow queer musical theatre artist. This event reminded me how much we need spaces to be vulnerable in community with other queer artists, and the depth of care that must be considered in making that space work for everyone involved. I'm so excited to see what Ring of Keys is building next!”

—Éamon Boylan, Key Member

Have an idea for a workshop?

“We were tired of being alienated as the token lesbian in a musical production,” Andrea Prestinario, the co-founder of Ring of Keys, said in an interview. Though she loves the musical theatre canon ... she felt while it was gay, it was not queer. Determined to do more than just sulk about what didn’t exist, she created something that did: a network that strives to, per their mission statement, “kick (ball-change) the closet door open to create a vibrant, diverse musical theatre landscape for the future.”
