In the June issue...

  • Playbill Pride Exclusive! 🌈
  • Cabaret On The Couch Concert⭐️
  • Casting Society of America partnership 🌱
  • #QueerTheBallet 👯‍♀️
To kick off Pride month, Ring of Keys partnered with Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS for a Queer Joy photo campaign. Photographed by Key Shani Hadjian (she/they), we're so proud to feature a dozen of our Keys in this exclusive Playbill feature!

“Our community has experienced so much trauma in the past year, particularly the trans community, as they face discrimination from over 100 anti-trans bills in state legislatures,” Ring of Keys Executive Director and Co-Founder Andrea Prestinario explained. ”We’ve also witnessed increasing violence toward our BIPOC and AAPI communities. This Pride, we want to celebrate our community and remember what brings us joy, what brings us hope. This queer joy campaign is an opportunity to share our queer selves, in our truth and authenticity, while creating visibility, which is at the core of our Ring of Keys mission.”

When I first moved back to NYC a few years ago, I was pretty beaten down by the ballet world and felt very isolated in my queerness. Embarking upon a new career in theatre felt so much less daunting when I discovered Ring of Keys- a diverse, supportive, and encouraging community that was doing the work, lifting up marginalized voices, and providing a soft place to land for those of us who feel forgotten by our art forms. I’ll never forget the first RoK show I saw at Birdland in 2018. I love musical theatre so much, but I didn’t realize just how much it would mean to me to be able to see such thoughtful queer representation in that setting.

Seeing the impact that Ring of Keys has had, and will continue to have, has inspired me to also confront the problematic aspects of professional ballet, and has helped illuminate for me the ways in which ballet must change and grow. Your important work has had a clear ripple effect on other artists and communities, and I count myself proud to be able to carry on that legacy and create change in the unique ways that ballet needs. I talk about Ring of Keys all the time in conversations I have about my work, and I will continue to refer to you as a direct and powerful influence on my project.
