Detection of Babesia odocoilei in Ixodes scapularis ticks collected in southern Ontario, Canada
Tick-borne diseases have an economic and societal impact on the well-being of people worldwide. In this study involving PacVec investigators Dr. Emily Pascoe and Dr. Janet Foley, a high frequency of Babesia odocoilei, a red blood cell parasite, was observed in the Huronia area of Ontario, Canada. Notably, 71% (15/21) blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, collected from canine and feline hosts were infected with B. odocoilei. Consistent with U.S. studies, 12.5% (4/32) of questing I. scapularis adults collected by flagging in various parts of southwestern Ontario were positive for B. odocoilei. This study provides the first documentation of B. odocoilei in I. scapularis collected from domestic dogs and cats in Canada. The study found B. odocoilei was widespread in southern Ontario, and the high prevalence of B. odocoilei in the Huronia area suggested that this parasite is established in natural cycles involving the local white-tailed deer population. [full article].
Support CDC tick surveillance activities!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeking Ixodes spp. ticks to expand their reference collection to support morphological identification and for the development of new molecular assays to identify ticks to species. If you have any additional ethanol-preserved ticks available that you’d be willing to send (shipping address is given below), CDC would love to receive up to 30 per species and life stage per submitter. Ideally, these would be accompanied with information on when the tick was collected and from which county.

Jeremiah Reyes, B.S., Trainee
 
Jeremiah Reyes is a Ph.D. student in biochemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). Jeremiah completed his B.S. in chemical engineering with a biomedical emphasis and mathematics minor at UNR. His primary research interests are identifying anti-tick vaccine targets using multi-omics tools. Jeremiah’s long-term goal is to pursue work as a military medical entomologist or work in the public health sector as a vector biologist. 
Fiza Arshad, M.S., Trainee
 
Fiza Arshad is a graduate research associate, interested in genomics, vector metabolism, and vector-pathogen interactions. Fiza completed her Master of Science in biotechnology at the University of Nevada, Reno. For her master’s thesis, she functionally characterized two cytochrome P450 G subfamily members in Aedes aegypti and showed functional diversity. Her long-term goal is to lead a research team as a faculty member or work as a vector biologist at the state level.
Monika Gulia-Nuss, Ph.D., M.S., PI, Board of Regents, NSHE, obo University of Nevada, Reno

The Gulia-Nuss Lab employs biochemistry, molecular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics approaches to understand the physiology of arthropod vectors of human disease. Most of the work has been focused on mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti, and ticks, Ixodes spp. One of the major areas of research is elucidating the functions of insulin-like peptides in arthropod physiology including nutrition, reproduction, and pathogen development. The Gulia-Nuss Lab is at the forefront of genetics and functional genomics techniques development for studying tick vectors on a molecular level.

Survey on Mosquito Control Action Thresholds

The Anastasia Mosquito Control District of St. Johns County, Florida, is collaborating with the Department of Defense Deployed Warfighter Program (DWFP) to better understand action thresholds which are used to make operational control decisions for mitigating nuisance and vector mosquitoes. The overarching goal will be to identify key thresholds used by mosquito control and preventive medicine units to understand the minimum criteria needed to develop evidence-based action thresholds for mosquito control where troops are deployed. Anastasia Mosquito Control asks for your valuable input on this subject by completing a short preliminary survey on behalf of your control program. Web-based Global Directory of Medical Entomology Courses

TDR has supported the development of a Global Atlas of Medical Entomology Schooling (GAMES), which lists a total of 126 medical entomology courses offered both on-campus and through distance learning in 32 countries across all WHO regions, covering seven languages. The freely available directory was developed in collaboration with the GVH and ARCTEC at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), following the mapping of courses available globally. WHO’s Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases and the WHO Global Malaria Programme have also reviewed the directory and provided recommendations. For each course, session dates, course outline, fees, language of instruction and responsible managers are listed.

Annual Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases six-day course
The Center for Health in the Human Ecosystem is hosting the third annual Biology of Vector-borne Diseases six-day course. This six-day course, offered through the University of Idaho, is both lecture- and discussion-based and is delivered by internationally recognized experts, with integrated case studies of emerging vector-borne pathogens. The course registration fee includes housing, meals, course materials and social activities. Registration will be due following acceptance into the course.

Videos on larval mosquito resistance testing
 
In collaboration with partners at the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California, PacVec CoE has produced new training videos providing an overview of resistance testing for larval mosquitoes. The videos discuss the rationale for monitoring resistance in mosquitoes, an overview of dose responses and how the dose response changes as resistance to larvicides evolves in a mosquito population, the different types of larval mosquito control agents, the supplies needed for carrying out bioassays, bioassay set-up and making stock solutions of control agents, and interpreting the bioassay results. If you have mosquito (Aedes or Culex) samples to be tested for insecticide resistance, PacVec is providing testing and training services at no charge, and all results will be returned to you. Dr. Anton Cornel's laboratory is leading this activity and organizing various regional training workshops on bottle bioassay testing. If you are interested, please contact us right away at bioassays@pacvec.us to arrange for shipment and timing of the testing.

 
Current situation with PacVec resistance testing

The Kearney Center has transitioned to remote work as a precaution due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This means any requested insecticide resistance testing or workshops will need to wait until normal activities resume. Dr. Anton Cornel and Katherine Brisco will still be available to offer resistance testing support and guidance at this time through email (bioassays@pacvec.us) or teleconferencing.
Vector Control and Public Health Agencies Need Summer Interns for 2020, or Just Help Advertising Positions for Students?
Please contact us anytime if your agency has seasonal positions that may be of interest to undergraduate students in the Pacific Southwest region. Such positions are important formative experiences for students, and they are excellent opportunities to raise awareness of career opportunities in vector-borne diseases. These can be simple job postings that we will advertise to our undergraduates or we can help you partner with faculty for project-based internships that involve academic credit with a faculty mentor and possible continued data analysis during the school year. NEW: Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Gompper lab at New Mexico State University’s Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology (https://fwce.nmsu.edu/) is seeking a Post-doctoral Research Associate in the field of Wildlife Disease Ecology, with a focus on understanding parasite-host interactions in the arid-land ecosystems of the southwestern US. Pending final approval of funding for the position, the expected start date is July 1 2021 (although earlier or later start dates may be possible). It is expected that two years of support is available for the position. The selected candidate will focus on several projects, including most prominently a NSF-funded study of the ecology of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus and a USDA – McIntire-Stennis funded project on the impacts of fire on the ecological parasitology of mammals.

The NOAA Global Systems Laboratory in Boulder is seeking to fill a postdoctoral researcher position. The postdoc will work with a team of NOAA, CDC, and NIH experts who are affiliated with the USGCRP Cross-cutting Interagency Working Group for Climate and Health (CCHHG). The team aims to advance the goals of the US Global Change Research Program’s (USGCRP) Climate and Health Monitor and Outlook (CHMO) activity (see: https://dx.doi.org/10.1175/bams-d-20-0054.1). The postdoctoral researcher will investigate opportunities to transition climate and health research into new national information products and services for vector-borne disease prediction.

Postdoctoral Researcher (2 positions open)

Two postdoctoral positions are available for highly motivated individuals to study mosquito – pathogen - host interactions using state-of-the-art approaches, combining infection assays,genetics, interaction and field studies. Postdoctoral Research Associate

The University of South Carolina Laboratory (UofSC) of Zoonotic and Vector-borne diseases is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join the lab, starting January 2021. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Melissa Nolan to execute multiplex pathogen detection assays, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis on pediatric cohort samples and insect vector species. About the UofSC Laboratory of Zoonotic and Vector-borne Diseases: the laboratory focuses on the epidemiology of Spotted Fever group rickettsioses, Chagas disease, gastrointestinal parasites and emerging arboviral pathogens in the United States and Latin America.

Postdoctoral Position

Dr. Michael Wimberly is seeking an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to study the environmental determinants of mosquito-borne disease transmission. The position is in the Ecological and Geospatial Research and Applications in Planetary Health (EcoGRAPH) group in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sustainability at the University of Oklahoma. The postdoc will have a major role in a new NIH-funded study exploring urban landscapes, climate variability, and mosquito transmission in India. This exciting project (R01AI153444) is a collaboration with Cornell University and the University of Chicago. They will also contribute to an established project on West Nile virus forecasting across four U.S. states.

The position is available as early as May 1, 2021, although a later start date is negotiable, and will be open until filled.

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Urban Pest Management

The Urban Entomology lab at Department of Entomology, Rutgers University has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position starting in January 2021. Primary responsibility is to conduct applied research in urban pest management. Current projects include house mouse and cockroach management research in apartment buildings. Summer Research Fellowship

The Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease is pleased to offer paid research fellowships to students and emerging professionals interested in the field of vector-borne disease during summer 2021. Environmental Epidemiology Program Manager

Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track)

Washington State University is seeking applications to fill this position. The position is defined as approximately 85% research, 10% formal teaching in graduate education and 5% service. Assistant/Associate Professor

The Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory (FMEL), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida is seeking applications to fill the position, Assistant/Associate Professor (Arbocirus Systems Genetics, Genomics, or Engineering). This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 85% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 15% teaching (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). Appointment at the Associate Professor level will be considered for individuals with special qualifications and experience and/or demonstrable research productivity and funding record. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Research duties focus on arthropod vectors of disease, particularly mosquitoes and ticks, and the pathogens they transmit with emphasis on using modern genetic engineering tools and procedures (e.g. CRISPR-Cas9 mediated transgenesis) for developing and evaluating new information and tools relevant to arbovirus system management. Tenure will accrue in the appropriate department in UF-IFAS.
