4th PacVec Annual Meeting 2021

The Pacific Southwest Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases (PacVec) hosted our 4th annual meeting virtually on February 17-18, 2021. Thank you to all of our friends and colleagues from academia, public health, and vector control who attended the annual meeting! This meeting brought together approximately 212 trainees, staff, and faculty, along with our advisors from CDC, to present and discuss research and surveillance updates from around the region and to find more ways to continue to strengthen our community of practice. When vector control and organic farming intersect: Pesticide residues on rice plants from aerial mosquito sprays

There are often conflicts between the use of pesticides for public health protection and organic farming. A well-known example is the use of insecticides for mosquito control in rice fields designated for organic farming. Rice fields, with static water and other conducive conditions, are favorable mosquito habitats. Best management practices are urgently needed to ensure the integrity of organic farming while addressing the need for public-health protection. In a new study, UC Riverside student Junlang Qiu and colleagues led by PacVec researcher Dr. Jay Gan collaborated with Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District to evaluate aerial ultra-low-volume (ULV) applications of two classes of mosquito adulticides, pyrethrins and organophosphates. The researchers monitored pesticide deposition and residues on rice plants throughout an active growing season in the Sacramento Valley of California, one of the main organic rice-producing areas in the U.S. [Full Article].

“Identifying biomarkers of pyrethroid resistance in wild Aedes aegypti from California”
Erin "Taylor" Kelly, B.S., Trainee

Erin “Taylor” Kelly is a Ph.D. student in vector biology, interested in vector metabolism, reproduction, and mechanisms of insecticide resistance. Kelly completed her Bachelor of Science in biology and minor in chemistry at Santa Clara University. Kelly’s long-term goal is to either pursue work as a professor with an appointment that combines teaching and research or work as a vector control biologist at the state or county level.
Geoffrey Attardo, Ph.D., PI, University of California, Davis 

The Attardo lab centers around the reproductive biology of insect vectors of human disease. The primary subjects of his work have been mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Attardo has studied how female mosquitoes regulate gene expression in response to blood feeding. He also studies the reproductive biology of tsetse flies, unique insects that lactate and give birth to live young. This work covers multiple areas of reproduction in tsetse including nutrition; analysis of genes associated with reproduction; the role symbiotic bacteria play in tsetse reproduction; and the interactions between insect vectors and the parasites they vector.

Survey on Mosquito Control Action Thresholds

The Anastasia Mosquito Control District of St. Johns County, Florida, is collaborating with the Department of Defense Deployed Warfighter Program (DWFP) to better understand action thresholds which are used to make operational control decisions for mitigating nuisance and vector mosquitoes. The overarching goal will be to identify key thresholds used by mosquito control and preventive medicine units to understand the minimum criteria needed to develop evidence-based action thresholds for mosquito control where troops are deployed. Anastasia Mosquito Control asks for your valuable input on this subject by completing a short preliminary survey on behalf of your control program. The CDC Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch is starting a new MALDI-TOF Tick ID project

The Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is partnering with various US-based and international universities and public health agencies to develop a robust, protein-based platform for identification and characterization of tick species of medical and veterinary importance, with applications for surveillance and scientific activities in the United States and other countries in the Western Hemisphere. We are currently seeking collaborators to provide recently collected (2017- present), field-caught specimens of Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, Dermacentor andersoni, Ixodes scapularis, and Ixodes pacificus. We are requesting samples of all feeding life stages of these species from various US locations for subsequent proteomic analysis. Desired specimens should be preserved in 70-95% ethanol and stored at room temperature since the time of collection. Ideally, at least 10 specimens from each geographical location are requested.

New Jersey Mosquito Control Association, 108th Annual Meeting (Virtual)

Web-based Global Directory of Medical Entomology Courses

TDR has supported the development of a Global Atlas of Medical Entomology Schooling (GAMES), which lists a total of 126 medical entomology courses offered both on-campus and through distance learning in 32 countries across all WHO regions, covering seven languages. The freely available directory was developed in collaboration with the GVH and ARCTEC at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), following the mapping of courses available globally. WHO’s Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases and the WHO Global Malaria Programme have also reviewed the directory and provided recommendations. For each course, session dates, course outline, fees, language of instruction and responsible managers are listed.

Online Training in Vector Surveillance
Learn to develop an effective vector surveillance program, collect data, and communicate risk with the Cornell Entomology Department and eCornell in the newest online course Vector-Borne Diseases Surveillance. Take this 3-week instructor-led course with Dr. Laura Harrington and learn best practices to implement vector surveillance, data, and reporting methods. The next offering of the course is scheduled to begin April 2021.

Annual Biology of Vector-Borne Diseases six-day course
The Center for Health in the Human Ecosystem is hosting the third annual Biology of Vector-borne Diseases six-day course. This six-day course, offered through the University of Idaho, is both lecture- and discussion-based and is delivered by internationally recognized experts, with integrated case studies of emerging vector-borne pathogens. The course registration fee includes housing, meals, course materials and social activities. Registration will be due following acceptance into the course.

Videos on larval mosquito resistance testing
In collaboration with partners at the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California, PacVec CoE has produced new training videos providing an overview of resistance testing for larval mosquitoes. The videos discuss the rationale for monitoring resistance in mosquitoes, an overview of dose responses and how the dose response changes as resistance to larvicides evolves in a mosquito population, the different types of larval mosquito control agents, the supplies needed for carrying out bioassays, bioassay set-up and making stock solutions of control agents, and interpreting the bioassay results. Need bottle bioassay testing?
If you have mosquito (Aedes or Culex) samples to be tested for insecticide resistance, PacVec is providing testing and training services at no charge, and all results will be returned to you. Dr. Anton Cornel's laboratory is leading this activity and organizing various regional training workshops on bottle bioassay testing. If you are interested, please contact us right away at to arrange for shipment and timing of the testing.

Current situation with PacVec resistance testing

The Kearney Center has transitioned to remote work as a precaution due to the COVID-19 outbreak. This means any requested insecticide resistance testing or workshops will need to wait until normal activities resume. Graduate Research Assistantship

The Reiskind Vector Ecology Laboratory at North Carolina State University has a research assistantship available for a doctoral or master’s student.  Responsibilities would include assessing bed net material efficacy, maintaining mosquito colonies, and developing and completing an original research thesis or dissertation project on the ecology of arthropod vectors.  The position is available starting in June of 2021, with enrollment as a graduate student in August of 2021. Colorado State University is seeking applications to fill this position, Assistant/Associate Professor. Medical & Veterinary entomology research focusing on vectors and vector-borne pathogens. Areas of focus are determined by the candidates, but may include vector-pathogen interactions, field studies in vector-borne diseases, control of arthropod populations, population biology and bionomics of arthropods, and efficient integration of data on vector-borne pathogen transmission and disease patterns with entomological sampling and environmental factors using spatial analysis and risk assessment. Primary collaborations within the Department of MIP are expected to be with the Vector Biology/Arbovirology faculty members and researchers of the Center for Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases (CVID), as well as with veterinarians involved researching vector-borne diseases of animals and humans, and those interested in spatial analysis and risk assessment of veterinary diseases. Additional collaborations with faculty in the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Colorado School of Public Health and Environment, researchers at the CDC-DVBD and at the USDA Wildlife Research Center.

Assistant/Associate Professor and Director

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology, and Plant Pathology (BCH-EPP) at Mississippi State University seeks to fill a tenure-track, position in entomology at the Assistant or Associate level on the main campus in Starkville. This position will consist of 70% research and 30% Teaching.
