Newsletter Winter 20/21

Though for many this has been a season of uncertainty, we are certain of one thing: God is sovereign. He is at work through these turbulent times.  Please read the updates from each of The Iceland Project ministries below to learn how God is continuing to work in Iceland.

There is exciting news this season. Gunnar is currently on paternity leave since on Monday January 4th, Svava gave birth to their fourth child, a beautiful baby girl. Gunnar will be on leave for the next two months.

He  will return to full time work for March and April, and will then be back on leave for May, June, and July. The baby is healthy, and the family is getting some much needed rest.

In the meantime, Elliot has taken over the primary preaching and teaching role. COVID continues to keep most things shut down, thus we have been unable to gather in person since October due to the restrictions. They have moved away from Facebook live over to Zoom, and that has proven fruitful. The move has allowed them to have times of singing together, as well as times of prayer together after the service. Though these have been joyful times, they continue to hope and pray for a lifting of restrictions so that we can gather in person again.

Other updates, they kicked off a reading plan together as a church for 2021. They will be going through the New Testament, reading 1 chapter a day with weekends off.  They have also had some new members join them, and some others who are hoping to join soon.

Finally, they also have an individual and a retired couple who are hoping to move here from the States. However, with the borders being closed, they have been unable to get here yet.

Please pray for:

  • Gunnar, that he would be a good and faithful husband, father, and pastor and that the Spirit would continue to grow him.
  • Svava as she recovers and the family as they adjust to having a new baby.
  • The baby that it would grow up into a strong and healthy girl.
  • Elliot,  that the Holy Spirit would equip him to lead and shepherd Loftstofan well.
  • Loftstofan, that God would stir up them all to love Him more and seek Him more.
  • The marriages, that they would reflect the good news of Jesus, and would faithfully point their children to Jesus.
  • The church, that they would be a faithful witness to the people of Iceland, and demonstrate the love of Jesus to them.
  • Those who are seeking to come and labor alongside them, pray that the borders would open soon.

Redeemer City Church has officially covenanted! They were able to meet together on October 25, 2020.

They heard two testimonies, prayed together, heard God’s word, read the church covenant together, voted in elders, and finished it all off with a baptism!

Little did they know this would be the last time they would all be able to gather in 2020, because the week after the covenanting service the gathering ban dropped to 10. So, for the months of November and December, they utilized Zoom for their Sunday worship time.

They have also started up a Community Group, a midweek Bible study and fellowship group, and approved their budget for 2021. The church is very excited as they enter 2021, hoping and praying that all of them will be able to gather in person and worship God on the Lord’s Day.

Please pray for:

  • Their remaining family in the U.S.
  • Potential new members who have shown interest in the church.
  • The college ministry, BSF.
  • The community to be centered on Christ.
  • Their relationships with one another would bring Him glory and help them to be more faithful and fruitful disciples.

Due to COVID restrictions, Ex Deus moved their Tuesday gathering completely to Zoom. Praise the Lord, most people who were involved and attending in the winter and spring of 2020 have stuck with them despite (in some cases) having returned to their home countries.

As far as interpersonal relationships are going, the Spirit has been busy moving in hearts! One of the students asked if Elliot would study the Bible with him. So, they have been walking through Mark together. The student has also started inviting his friends to come read and ask their questions! This could have never been predicted, all glory to God! Another student with whom Hildur has been meeting has also started asking really good questions, and the Spirit is moving in her heart. She is not yet ready to submit to Jesus as Lord and Savior yet, but we believe she will in God’s timing.

Despite the setbacks of COVID, God has used this time to allow them to invest more deeply in some relationships in ways we might not have been able to otherwise, so praise be to God for this.

Please pray that:
  • They would see people saved.
  • God provides them with wisdom as they navigate these uncertain times and circumstances.
  • They would represent Christ well and accurately to the campus.
  • The Spirit would soften hearts and that the family of God would grow.
Praise the Lord for how He has blessed their relationships and conversations.
The Iceland Project is a 501(c)3 Non-profit organization.  This means our financial supporters can now support the project and it's individual ministries directly. This also allows us to prepare for future growth so that we can readily support more ministries as they begin in Iceland.

Please pray that:
  • The people of Iceland would develop a hunger and thirst for the true, triune God.
  • God would raise up more workers to witness and minister to the people of Iceland.
  • The ministers of the Truth in Iceland would not grow weary, but continue to share the Gospel and God's love at every opportunity.
  • That the followers of Christ in Iceland would continue to grow in maturity as they pursue fellowship with God and with one another.
