Spotlight on Sam!

Have you met Sam? He is one of our beloved lesson horses, also known as "Horse Barbie" for his luscious mane and good looks.  Sam weighs 1,500 lbs and is full of personality and silly quirks!  Here are some of our favorites:
  • Sam has the largest hooves in the barn and his shoes have to be special ordered
  • Sam changes colors from Winter to Summer as he grows and sheds his winter coat
  • Sam won't pee if he thinks it will splash on his legs and often holds it until he gets in the arena.  If he doesn't have enough bedding in his stall and doesn't get out to pee, he will stop drinking water and colic!
  • He loves going through water on trail rides, which is very rare for horses!
  • Sam is a great jumper and is capable of jumping 3-3.5'
The Sande Youth Leadership Program!

Sande has recently grown our Barn Buddy Program into a multi-level, long-term leadership program for youth called The Sande Youth Leadership Program. This four-tiered program builds resiliency in young people ages 8 - 18 and grows their horsemanship skills as they engage in the full spectrum of horse care activities. Sande Youth Leadership is designed for young people ages 8 - 18 who have demonstrated a commitment to becoming a part of the Sande barn community and wish to grow their horsemanship skills. By learning how to care for and ride horses, young people are building their life skills, strength and resiliency.

In Level 1 Youth Leadership, students receive a general overview of daily horse care, horse health and wellness, ground handling and riding.  This class has a different life skill focus each day and closing discussions are centered around the focus skill and building resiliency.  In Level 2, students train to become Youth Horse Care volunteers, with classes centered more specifically around stall cleaning, feeding, blanketing, assisting with turnouts and treating hooves.  Students can qualify for Level 2 by passing Level 1 or testing into it through our standard lesson program.  In Levels 3 and 4, students train to first become Peer Mentors and Assistants for horsemanship lessons, then train to become Junior Riding Instructors. Upon completing 100 hours of a Junior Instructor Apprenticeship, kids can qualify to become paid Assistant Instructors.
